Newtownsha­ndrum 2-14 Na Piarsaigh 1-15

HAVING drawn with Ballymartl­e in their first round game, Newtownsha­ndrum recorded a close win over Na Piarsaigh on Sunday at Na Piarsaigh.

It was a game where very little separated the sides with the winners holding a slight lead for long periods. Evan Sheehan and Shane Forde with early points gave the home side the lead.

Newtown battled back-good play by Mattie Ryan led to a Darragh Hawe point before Ryan Clifford levelled in the 8th minute. Points by Ryan Clifford and Jack Twomey were followed by an excellent point by Shane Forde.

Further pressure by the Avondhu side saw Jamie Coughlan (free) John Geary and Mattie Ryan add points as they moved 0-7 to 0-3 clear. Na Piarsaigh had a good point by Dan Gunning after good play by Gordon Joyce.

The Seandun side’s Kalvin Forde with a well taken sideline cut found Padraigh Guest who sent over. Jamie Coughlan with a 28th minute pointed free was followed by a Padraigh Guest point that had the winners 0-8 to 0-6 clear at the break.

On the resumption Evan Sheehan pointed an early free. They took the lead briefly when Shane Forde goaled. From the puckout Jamie Coughlan gained possession and netted edging Newtown 1-8 to 1-7 clear.

Throughout the game the winners half-back line were very solid. Good play by Ryan Clifford led to a Jack Twomey point. Donagh Stack followed with another. Evan Sheehan kept the City side in touch from a free.

Two rapid Ryan Clifford points opened up a four point lead 1-12 to 1-8. Entering the final quarter Jamie Coughlan had his second goal. Evan Sheehan and Kalvin Forde replied with points 2-12 to 1-10.

Na Piarsaigh tried very hard, they had points by Dan Gunning and Evan Sheehan (free) to come within a goal 2-12 to 1-12. Substitute Eoin Coughlan struck a long range point for the Avondhu side before Evan Sheehan with another free cut the lead to a goal.

Good play by another substitute Kieran O’Sullivan led to a great point by Ryan Clifford as the winners moved four points clear. Evan Sheehan added another free 2-14 to 1-14. In injury time Pa O’Rourke struck a long range point. Time ran out and it was Newtown who remain unbeaten from their two games played to date.
