GUN, WEAPONS, DRUGS SEIZED IN MALLOW

- BILL BROWNE

A CACHE of weapons, including an imitation firearm and a hurley with machette-like modification, were among items seized by Gardai from the Mallow District during raids at addresses across North Cork.

Gardai who searched five premises across the region last Thursday as part of an Operation Thor ‘ day of action’, also seized a number of other weapons, including knives, knuckledusters and bats.

It is understood that €500 worth of suspected cannabis, which has been sent for analysis, and other drug related paraphernalia were also seized during the raids.

Gardai and Customs Services also carried out a search of a premises resulting in the seizure of roughly 3,500 cigarettes, an amount of laundered diesel and as many as 60 beer kegs, which were believed to have been stolen.

Three people were arrested during the operation and a number of immigration checks undertaken across the district, which officials will be following up on.

The operation followed up from a similar operation undertaken earlier in the week by Gardai from Anglesea Street, which resulted in the arrests of 13 people following searches at 18 premises.

Gardai said the purpose of both operations was to prevent crime, disrupt criminal activity, apprehend criminals and enhance community engagement.
