- Macroom Gaa club Weekly update

condolences:

Brian Goold (48) died suddenly in Belfast this weekend. The members of the club are shocked and saddened by his unexpected demise. The club expresses its condolences to Brian’s family on their tragic loss. Brian won a county minor medal in 1987 and played for Cork minors that year.

cancellations:

Bad weather caused the deferral of some games this week; the matches of the U-16s and the U-14s were cancelled and will be re-scheduled in due course.

u-21s:

On Monday Macroom met Canovee in the quarter final of the Mid- Cork B championship in Clondrohid. On a bitterly cold day, Macroom started well and scored two early points and should have more scores on the board. Canovee got a goal after eight minutes, and led 1-1 to 0-2.

Macroom finished the half stronger and led by 0-7 to 1-3 at the break, Olan O’Leary and Ethan O’Gorman each getting two points. Despite playing against the wind, Macroom dominated the third quarter and stretched their lead to three points, but really it should have been more.

Back came Canovee and converted some frees to nudge ahead. In the 59th minute, Canovee led by a single point. In a final sortie into Canovee territory, Macroom worked the ball forward and Olan O’Leary notched the match-winning goal to leave the final score Macroom 1-10, Canovee 1-8. The scorers were O. O’Leary 1-2, E. O’Gorman 0-3, S. McMahon 0-2 and B. O’Gorman, A. Quinn, and C. O’Riordan one point each.

u-12s:

Macroom travelled to play Clondrohid in a challenge match and the astro turf provided an ideal surface on the day. In a competitive and skilful game, both teams played well. The pitch size dictated a 12-a-side match with roll-on/rolloff substitutions.

Macroom showed great improvement since its first game and there is great excitement at what can be achieved in the year. The management was delighted with the display.

u-11s:

Macroom played a challenge game v. Aghinagh on Monday in the TCP. Conditions were difficult but credit is due to both teams for their efforts, with some excellent football on display. With a full turnout it was a very worthwhile run-out for the lads who tired towards the end. A couple of late scores edged the game for Aghinagh. They next have a league game against Sam Maguires on Thurs. at 7p.m. in Dunmanway.

st. patrick’s day parade:

About 30 of the club’s younger juveniles, together with their parents, took part in the parade and marched with their friends from Macroom AFC Schoolboys. In spite of the cold weather, they all really enjoyed themselves.
