Droves support ‘carnival’ parade in Millstreet
A FASCINATING carnival atmosphere added to the enjoyment of the late afternoon Parade on St. Patrick’s Day in Millstreet.
Cold, crisp but dry conditions added to the staging to allow throngs line the pavements and enjoy the proceedings in a joint venture organised from a committee drawn from the Millstreet Development Group and Millstreet Community Council.
Earlier in the day, Millstreet Pipe Band performed in Ballydaly and returned in good time for a recital before and after 11.30am Mass in Millstreet and travelling onto Killarney.
Grand Marshals Daniel and Majella O’Donnell proved a top attraction where commercial interests together with sporting, voluntary, school and cultural outlets offered diverse viewing, colourful costumes and floats as did a vintage car and tractor display to add enormously to the enjoyment of the proceedings compered by Community Council chairman Noel Buckley,
Participants from the greater Duhallow and Mid Cork region broadened the interest with Millstreet Pipe Band fronting the Parade and performing on St Patrick’s Day in Millstreet for the 67th consecutive year with Cullen Pipe Band also participating on a weekend they celebrated their 77th anniversary.
Reviewing the parade in the Town Square were the organising committee and Community Council officers in the company of Canon John Fitzgerald and public representatives Michael Moynihan TD Andrias Moynihan, TD; Cllr. Melissa Mullane and Cllr. Gearoid Murphy.
K&L took the Denny Pop McSweeney Memorial Trophy for Best Commercial fleet. The Best Vintage accolade belonged to Millstreet Vintage Club, Culture, Millstreet GAA Set Dancers, Best Float, Millstreet Parents Association with Carriganima NS in runner up place with Best Group Award to the Hip Hop Dancers.
Best Celebrity Look a like was Donald Trump and King Jon Un, also acknowledged were the Young Offenders and, no surprise, Daniel and Majella Road Adventures.
The Best Window prize was awarded to O’Leary Family Butchers.
