Sigerson form tells for CIT against Muskerry

COUNTY SFC ROUND 1

- AUBERT TWOMEY Macroom

CIT 1-16 Muskerry 2-6

THE students from the Cork Institute of Technology had a major advantage when they faced Muskerry in the first round of the county senior football championship.

The divisional side had very little time to get a group of players together to perform with a reasonable degree of effectiveness while the CIT players had recently been involved in the Sigerson Cup so they had all the advantages at Paírc Ui Rinn on Tuesday evening last.

Muskerry had players on duty who making their first entry into top level football and it proved to be a major undertaking. The mid Cork side gave it their best shot and a second minute point from full forward Brian Cronin was a brief boost to their morale.

CIT began to stamp their authority on the game, however, as their excellent midfield duo of Cillian O’Hanlon and Kieran Murphy ensured that they stayed constantly on the offensive.

Murphy scored their first point in the fourth minute and they subsequently raised additional white flags as Danno Duínnín (2), Stephen O’Sullivan and Cillian O’Hanlon were all on target to put them leading 0-5 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Muskerry’s efforts at attacking effectively were promptly intercepted by the steady CIT defenders and the former fell further behind when Sean Bambury registered the students’ sixth point in the 17th minute.

The situation got worst for Muskerry when the in form Cillian O’Hanlon found the net with a powerful drive in the 22nd minute and Danno Duínnín followed with a minor as the students stock soared.

Muskerry got a point back when substitute John Corkery made an immediate impact following his introduction, but the score was quickly nullified. Kieran Murphy score a CIT point from long range.

Muskerry consequently had it all to do trailing 1-9 to 0-2 at the interval. Their position improved to a degree when the action resumed. Fintan Goold scored a point from a free in the 32nd minute and minors from play followed from James Moynihan and Brian Cronin.

A CIT point from Tomás Sheehy ensured that the side stayed comfortable however as the contest entered its final quarter. The loudest cheer of the evening was heard when John Corkery did well to finish a centre from David Horgan and there was a slight chance that Muskerry might press on.

CIT had the players however to produce that something extra among them Danno Duínnín from Cill na Martra who scored three points in the final quarter. The students were comfortable in the closing stages and some superb saves by David Moynihan in the Muskerry goal foiled them of an even more convincing victory.

Muskerry never gave up the ghost and a goal from another substitute Micheál Ó Duínnín ensured that the scoreboard had an appearance of respectability.
