Fermoy just too strong for Mallow

BARNES JEWELLERS (FERMOY) UNDER 21 AFC

-

Fermoy 1-14 Mallow 0-7

AN evenly balanced Fermoy side ran out worthy winners over Mallow in the Barnes Jewellers (Fermoy) Under 21 AFC at Castletownroche on Monday.

Despite Mallow being first to score through a Kevin Taylor pointed free it was Fermoy that created all the running in this half with Ross O’Sullivan, Ronan Morrisson, Sean McCarthy, Rory McEvoy, Harry Beresford, Dale Dawson and the Lardner brothers to the fore.

They were 0-4 to 0-1 in front before they struck for the only goal of the game at the end of the first quarter when Rory McEvoy was brought down in the square and a penalty awarded.

The resultant spot kick was expertly dispatched to the net by Conor De Roiste. Mallow improved as the half went on with Stephen O’Callaghan, Peadar Hennessy, Kevin Taylor, Jack Dillon, Jack Kennedy and Peter Attridge making an impression.

Two points in as many minutes by Peter Attridge and Kevin Taylor closed the deficit to 1-4 to 0-3 by the 18th minute. However, it was Fermoy that gained a foothold once again and some well taken points before the interval by Dale Dawson (2) Daniel O’Flynn, Harry Beresford and Rory McEvoy had them ahead at break 1-10 to 0-4.

On the changeover Mallow showed signs a second half revival with Kevin Taylor and Peter Attridge kicking over early points while Peadar Hennessy was denied a certain goal when the Fermoy keeper Ryan Sergeant was called upon to make a great save at the expense of a ‘45.

Exchanges were close enough for a while, but Mallow found scores difficult to come by. Instead it was Fermoy that finished out the game strongly in the final quarter. Daniel O’Flynn and substitute David O’Callaghan had a point each before O’Flynn was denied a goal scoring chance in the 52nd minute when the Mallow keeper Kevin Doyle got across well to make a vital save off his line.

Fermoy added two more points in the closing moments, while Mallow were awarded two penalties in the space of a minute before the final whistle with the Fermoy keeper Ryan Sergeant making two massive saves from Kevin Taylor on both occasions as they ran out comfortable winners.
