Fermoy out of Junior Plate at hands of Old Christians

- BY DIARMUID SHEEHAN

YOU can’t have everything in life – something that Fermoy Rugby will have realised after they lost out in a terrific battle to Old Christians last weekend in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Plate.

Fermoy will have gone in to this one still on a high after securing J2 status for next year thanks to a brilliant run of form saw them win the promotion playoff competition the previous weekend but on this day their dreams of a double were dashed as Christians eased to a 20-3 lead at the break before holding off a second half resurgence from the north Cork side to take the spoils by 33-22.

A brace of first half tries from Matt O’Connell set the tone of the afternoon for Christians with John Marnell splitting the posts four times in that first 40, converting both tries as well as two penalties.

Fermoy had to rely on the boot of Eoin Lacey to get their only score of the half, a drop goal, which gave the men in green something to cheer about at the interval.

This one looked done when Sean Meaney added his side’s third try which was again converted by Meaney. The kicker was having a terrific day with the boot, slotting over another brace of penalties to see his side past 30 points.

Fermoy hit back hard with tries from Darren Magner, Dean Moorehouse and Tom Murphy with Lacey adding the extras on two of the three occasions however on this day there was little doubting that the better side won.

A good display from a Fermoy side that have impressed many with their second half of the season revival.
