Championship defeat for hurlers
MAKING their debut in the Cork Senior hurling championship, Kanturk came out second best against Newtownshandrum in the opening round at Charleville on Saturday last at Charleville.
Newtown got off to the ideal start and raced into a 1-04 to 0-01 lead before taking a commanding 1-10 to 0-04 lead as the closing ten minutes of the half dawned.
Kanturk settled and by the interval were 0-07 to 1-11 in arrears. A Newtown goal early in the second half sealed the issue for them but Kanturk never gave up and in a well contested second half ended 0-15 to 2-14 in arrears on the call of time.
Kanturk now face into the 2nd round of the championship and a meeting with Bishopstown in July. INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL: Kanturk Premier Intermediate footballers return to league action with a Division 2 league tie away to Clyda Rovers on Friday 4th May at 8.15pm.
Both Kanturk and Clyda Rovers suffered reversals in their opening championship ties in their respective grades and will be looking to league form to build up to further championship tests later in the summer. JUVENILE AFFAIRS: Kanturk travel to Inniscarra to face the home side in the Rebel Og Central U16P2 HC on Thursday 3rd May with a 7.15pm start. Kanturk have prepared well in the league todate and will be hopeful of doing well against the home side.
In Feile na nOg U14 football Wolfe Tones (Kanturk) travel to Donoghmore to face Aghinagh and Donoghmore at 11-50am and 12-40pm with the group winner facing a final at 1-40pm.

THE annual novena in honour of the Venerable Edel Quinn will take place in St. Mary’s Church, Castlemagner from Friday 4th May until Saturday 12th May at 8pm each evening, except for Saturday 5th, when it commences at 7.00pm, before the evening Mass.
The event includes rosary, benediction and other prayers each evening. The faithful continue to pray for the Beatification of Edel, a wonderful Irish lay missionary, who was very active in the Legion of Mary. Born and baptised in Castlemagner, she died in Nairobi, Kenya on May 12, 1944, aged 36 years.
