Mallow Utd makes the French connection

-

A NEW chapter in the twinning between the towns of Mallow and Tréguier in France unfolded at St. Gobnait’s Park last Sunday afternoon as Mallow United hosted Tregor FC for the first time.

The visitors from France arrived in Mallow on Saturday afternoon with many of the visiting families being hosted by parents of the Mallow United players. After taking 24 hours to settle in, with some of the visitors taking in local attractions such as Mallow Castle, the French contingent arrived at St. Gobnaits Park on Sunday morning in buoyant form with the spring sunshine adding to the occasion.

Two fixtures were arranged with both Mallow United U/12s and U/13s facing their French counterparts. Both games were well balanced affairs with all sides maintaining a high tempo.

In the first fixture Mallow United U/12s got the better of their counterparts winning 2-0 with Aaron Owens and Ben McPhillips getting the Mallow goals. The U/13 game saw Mallow United come out on top again with a 5-2 win.

Results were not important on the day, however, as the occasion was about the opportunity for members of the Mallow community to engage with the visitors from Tréguier and discussions have already began on the possibility of Mallow United maklng a return visit to France next year.

Mallow United would like to thank the Mallow-Treguier Twinning Committees for their help in organising last Sundays events.

On Monday, May 7 Mallow United will host a fundraising walk in Doneraile Park. The walk is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the wildlife at Doneraile Park, one of Irelands top tourist attractions, while supporting Mallow United.

Tickets are available from all coaches or at the event itself with a family ticket costing €20 and an individual ticket costing €10. The walk takes place at 12pm and all are welcome.
