Castlelyons book their place in impressive style

CASTLELYONS booked their spot in round 2A of the PIHC on Saturday thanks to a thrilling win over Youghal at Killeagh.
This game, not far from a derby fixture, was always likely to be a quality affair and on the day neither team disappointed as both sides went at it right from the first whistle.
Youghal will be bitterly disappointed at the final result, which could have been so much different if they hadn’t gone all of 28 minutes without registering a score.
Right from the off Youghal looked good with Brett Moloney getting the first score of the game however Castlelyons came back with five points in a row to lead by four at the quarter hour mark.
Castlelyons were comfortable at this point but succumbed to half a dozen points from the sea-siders as this game began to capture the imagination.
Alan Fenton was in fine form for the victors with four points in the opening half and nine overall with his last of the first half giving Castlelyons a one point lead at the interval. 0-11 to 0-10.
Fenton again impressed after the break with a host of impressive scores as Youghal continued their baron spell that had begun five minutes before the short whistle.
Castlelyons dominated and moved out to an eight point lead with just over five to go however this one was far from done as Youghal found another gear as well as the posts.
Youghal’s James O’Mahony smashed home the only goal of the game to cut the deficit somewhat with four late points raising the temperature to near fever pitch.
To their credit, Castlelyons hung on, just, and will look forward to improving on what was a terrific display in parts. For Youghal there is little doubt that they left this one get away from them and they will need to eradicate long scoreless periods from their game if this season is to bring anything for them.
