NEWMARKET continued their impressive start to the Twohigs Supervalu Junior A Hurling League with a well-deserved victory over Castlemagn­er in Meelin last Sunday. Throughout the hour Newmarket emerged slicker with their hurling than their opponents who were making their seasonal debut.

From the start, Newmarket hurled with intent and took the lead through points from Darren O’Keeffe, Niall Collins and Paddy Browne. Castlemagn­er hit back with a goal, Timmy Murphy netting after a good solo run from Evan O’Sullivan.

Shane Curtin added consecutiv­e points for Castle however, Newmarket extended their lead with a goal from Stephen Stokes to leave the score at 1-9 to 1-4 at the half-time whistle.

Upon the resumption, both sides fell guilty of wasteful shooting however Newmarket substitute Cian Crowley put clear daylight between the teams with a well taken goal.

Castlemagn­er reacted positively from the encouragin­g play of Donal Gayer and Denis Meade with points to Conor Murphy. Newmarket were able to regain the initiative however, boosted by the play of Donal Hannon, Kevin O’Sullivan and Robert Stack.

Indeed, Newmarket closed out the game effectivel­y with late points to Hannon and Stokes to seal the win.
