Ross Oil championship gets underway with some exciting fare on show
LAST weekend saw commencement of the Ross Oil Company Muskerry junior football championship.
The fare produced was satisfying and hopefully an indication that this particular championship will again be an exciting one. Over the years it has been the Muskerry division’s most exciting competition and we feel reasonably confident that situation will not change in 2018.
There were two first round games last week and the encounter played at Carrigadrohid on Saturday evening went to extra time. Éire Óg’s second choice squad faced Donoughmore and the latter were slightly fancied to advance.
Éire Óg have a good panel of footballers at present, however, and at this early stage of action they have players who could be promoted to intermediate duty later in the season.
They consequently made life uncomfortable for their opponents on Saturday last throughout the first hour and Donoughmore scored a point in the dying seconds to take the game to extra time.
Éire Óg had the edge during that extra period and they were victorious by a three points margin. Dylan Foley who had a personal score of 1-6 was their leading performer and others to figure prominently were Alan O Mahony, Paul McDonagh, Dermot Hurley and Eoin Kelleher. Donoughmore had good performers in Aidan Corkery, Tom Joe Barrett, Leon Cogan and Darren Lucey.
On Sunday at Kilmurry last season’s defeated finalists Iveleary were in action against Inniscarra.
This contest produced a lot of good football, but the power of the Iveleary attack posed significant problems for their opponents.
Cathal Vaughan lined out at centre half forward while their full forward line of Chris Óg Jones, Barry O’Leary and Brian Cronin were lethal. Sean O’Donoghue for Inniscarra got the job of marking Vaughan and he performed well enough, but the winners were not depending on one attacker.
Others came up trumps particularly Chris Óg Jones who scored 2-2. O Donoghue had good support in the Inniscarra line out from Conor Buckley, John O’Callaghan and substitute Liam Collins who made an impact when he was introduced.
On Friday the junior football championship will continue with a game at Clondrohid involving Aghinagh and Kilmichael. This is a first round game that could be well worth a visit.
Both clubs are capable of playing good football and they have good footballers in their ranks.
Peter Kelleher, Simon Foley and Conor Cotter will be to the forefront for Kilmichael while Declan Ambrose, Dermot O Callaghan, Donal Corkery and Aodh Twomey should make their presence felt for Aghinagh.
