GAA club have much to celebrate this year

-

BOHERBUE GAA took the time out recently from the sweat and toil of a rewarding past season at a function in the Killarney Heights Hotel.

The club’s fortunes enjoyed an upward swing that culminated in them regaining a hold of the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship for the first time since 1988. By doing so, Boherbue flagged their rising stock to better some of the big guns when the championship pressure was exerted.

Having promised much over recent years, Boherbue had failed to reach a final since a defeat to Cullen after a replay in 2008. That said, Boherbue were always amongst the front runners in 2017 in the aftermath of total dominance of the Ducon Cup over the past four seasons and they duly obliged much to the delight of supporters.

At the celebration night, Duhallow Board chairman Joe Kearns spoke of Boherbue’s consistency that saw them complete a league and football championship double.

“With a great crop of young players surfacing, Boherbue have the potential to enjoy further success, the club can look ahead on a positive note, holding the talent to take on new challenges in the next few years”, he said.

Team captain Daniel Buckley applauded all involved and held a special mention for a dedicated management team.

“After a 29 year absence, it was great to celebrate a championship victory, hopefully, we can go progress and add to our achievements”, he said.

Traditionally, one of the highlights at the club function is the announcement of Club Person of the Year and the Billy McAulliffe Memorial Shield. However, this year there was no surprise on the selection of the organisers of the hugely popular Boherbue Strictly dance night. The dance-off allowed participants shimmy and twirl their way through a range of routines from the chacha to swing, samba, salsa and jive on what was a marvellous staging.

Boherbue club officers acknowledged the popular dance format proved a massive success and source of raising finance that’s so vital to ensure the club can continue to provide the best facilities for players and teams. For their efforts, the organisers merited special recognition and were duly lauded at the club celebration night.
