GAA ACTION

TWO FORTUNATE GOALS PROPEL US TO THE U21 FINAL - On Tuesday night, the 24th, Killavullen came from 4 points down at the interval to win by 5 points in the latest and final game of the round robin series in this years Under 21 C Grade football championship, again Kilara Óg in a game played in Ballyhooley.

Killavullen were slow to start but got the opening score from Charlie Lillis but the Kilworth –Araglin combination equalised. We got the next score from the hard working Padraig Cronin, but our opponents equalised again and then raced ahead with two further points. We were sloppy with the ball and got punished twice from Kilara with breakaway points to leave us 4 points in arrears at the break, 0-06 to 0-02.

We got back into the game in the second period when the repositioned Fionn Magner became very influential, coming forward from his new half back berth. Michael Fresh blasted a fine goal for us, and Jack O Connor curled a delightful point over the bar. Padraig Cronin followed in a shot that was dropping short, and was gathered by their goalkeeper, but that player attempted clearance rebounded off Padraig and over the line to give us a decent bit of daylight between the teams. We got fine points from Eddie Cotter and Eoghan Buckley to push us further ahead.

The game ended with a welter of excitement when a long 45 got a touch in the square to beat out goal keeper James to leave only 2 points between the teams, and time nearly up but the fate of the game was sealed when Liam Fox bundled the ball over their line for another goal to push Killavullen into the final against Kildorrery. The final score was 3-08 to 1-09.

DISAPPOINTMENT AS A POOR START PROVES COSTLY– They say a good start is half the work but a real bad one gave us a mountain to climb in this U21C Football final. Kildorrery raced to a 0-1 to 0-8 point lead within the first 20 minutes of this game as we continued our slow starting form. It proved the crucial period of the game as it was a fairly very even affair from there on.

An energetic Kildorrery midfield got on top early and that proved the spring board for a points blitz as we struggled to get a grip on the game. Charlie from a free getting our only score in this time. Credit where credit is due and we fought back with points from Jack O’Connor Eddie Cotter and Mike Fresh to turn at half time just 4 points down. 0-4 to 0-8.

Its small consolation, but we outscored our opponents 0-3 to 0-2 in the second half. A reflection on the work rate of our players especially the six backs when we didn’t have the ball. Equally we got little change from our opposition and while we tried hard there was little spark or penetration in our forward play. Jack, Charlie and Mike getting points to make the last ten minutes a sweat for the Kildorrery side.

Towards the end of the game with Killavullen pressing hard gaps opened up for the Kildorrery attack but they found James Angland in great form and he kept a clean sheet on the night with some superb goalkeeping. Ian Roche and Noah Butler stood out in defence with a special mention for Seamus Fox who put a real shift in on his first game back after breaking his nose in an earlier round.

We can look back on uprights hit and two goal chances not converted but this was a decent Kildorrery side that overall were a little better balanced than our Killavullen 15. Congrats to them and we now look forward to the Junior and Minor championships ahead.

A word of thanks to Glanworth, who had their grounds in great shape for the final, in spite of the heavy rain on the day. Final score 0-7 to 0-10.

UNDER 16 GAME–Killavullen and Clyda Rovers played out an entertaining game of hurling, on a beautifully prepared pitch in Killavullen, on Thursday night last, the 26th. The grounds man in Croke Park would have been proud of the diagonal cut to the grass on the field before the game, performed by Timmy Kinsella, who is a huge asset to Killavullen club. Unfortunately for both teams, it was raining and made for slippery conditions. Killavullen got hooks and blocks into their game and bounced back well from a drubbing that they got on Monday night last, at the hands of Ballycastle Gaels. Colm Looney was very dangerous when he got quick delivery into him, but it was the attitude of the backs that was more commendable. With some rejigging of personnel, we looked a far better rear guard outfit and restricting Clyda to 8 point over the hour, and only four from play.

Colm got two goals in the first 10 minutes, and we had further scores throughout the half from Darragh O Grady, and Sean Palmer to lead at the interval 2-04 to 0-03. In this half, Mark Nagle was influential in midfield also but has to be reassigned after the break, having picked up a leg injury.

After the break, we were not quite as fluent but Michael Walsh got a goal from distance, and our half back line contained their opposing players well, with Brian superb but Conor and Sean gave him great assistance also. Colin Carey was very good on his birthday, and Ben Hunter might just have found his best position, he kept the ball coming out in front of him, throughout the game. Ronan Barry was very good at full back, and protected James in goals admirably.

Darragh kept the ball moving well, and Sean Palmer was proving elusive to his opposing number. Conor and Colm were combining well, and noticeable was the desire of our entire forward unit to prevent the Clyda backs getting easy clearances. Jack never gave us on the cause, and we got another goal from Michael to run out deserving winners on a final score of 4-07 to 0-08.

The young referee, Colin Twomey from the Kilshannig club had a fine game, in which he was sensible with the whistle, on a greasy surface.

Killavullen V Ballycastle Gaels: Killavullen U16’s came up well short in the Under 16 B 1 Hurling games against Ballycastle Gaels, on Monday night of last week. Ballycastle were much the better team throughout the field, and won very comprehensively on a final score of 7-20 to 1-03

HOSTING INTERMEDIATE HURLING GAME – St. Catherine’s V Grenagh: On Sunday last, the Killavullen club did a very fine job in hosting the Cork County Intermediate Hurling game between St. Catherine’s and Grenagh.

The pitch was expertly prepared and lined by Tommy Cremin and John Brennan, and the large attendance was treated to a manly display of tough uncompromising hurling. Joe Howard as chairman can be well pleased with the amount of personnel that he had on hand to supervise the game, the tickets sellers at the gate, the parking and gate stewards and Tom Owens on the score board. St. Catherine’s prevailed in the game on a final score of 1-17 to 0-15.
