TIDY TOWNS
On Saturday last the Tidy Towns Committee organised a big cleanup of the village and approach roads and wish to thank all those who helped in any way especially the Girl Guides, who were there in their numbers.
It was a very satisfying exercise and the fruits of their labour was clearly visible by lunchtime. The committee members and supporters have been extremely busy over the past few weeks, despite the bad weather, and various projects are on hand. Six shrubberies in the vicinity of McAuliffe Avenue are being re-planted along with additional planting at various other areas.
Contractors too, have finally commenced working in the Beeches Estate at Laharn and already changes for the better can be seen with the erection of wooden fencing and planting along the roadside. The Tidy Towns Committee have this year joined with the Cork County Council Litter Challenge which commences on May 14. More details later.

RUNNING CLUB
Buttevant running club are promoting their first four mile road race on Friday May 18th. The race is part of the Ballyhoura active seriesand will commence at 8.00p.m. Registration will take place on the evening of the race at Buttevant G.A.A. PILGRIMAGE
Buttevant and Lisgriffin parish will be part of the annual Cloyne diocesan pilgrimage to Knock shrine on Sunday May 13th. 2018. A coach will depart from Main Street Buttevant at 8.00a.m. and early booking is advisable. All relevant information can be had by contacting Peggy Duggan on -087-2067067 as soon as possible.
The local parish church choir has been invited to sing at the celebrations during the Cloyne pilgrimage at the Knock shrine and anyone interested in travelling as part of the choir should contact Susan O’Keeffe for further information.
CEMETERY MASS
The annual remembrance Mass at Saint Brigids’ Cemetry Buttevant will take place on Wednesday May 16th. All who have relatives friends and acquaintances are invite to attend this annual remembrance occasion. The Mass will commence at 8.00p.m. A good attendance is anticipated.
AVONDHU BLACKWATER
The Avondhu Blackwater Partnership in the near future are arranging a Building Confidence programme in Buttevant in the Mercy Day Care Centre. This programme will investigate overcoming social barriers building and maintaining confidence and increasing resilience. The programme will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between the hours of 9.00a.m. and 1.00p.m. inclusive. Further information can be had by contacting Mary Gubbins on 086-8525992-.
HOLY WELL
The annual Mass at Templemary Holy Well has been arranged to take place on Friday May 04th.2018 at 8.00p.m. This is an annual celebration for the souls of those interred in this sacred resting place. There are many remains interred in this graveyard both local and from various parishes around the Cork area. All relatives of those buried in the cemetery are cordially invited to be present on the appointed date. No doubt the cemetery committee and voluntary helpers will have the burial ground well prepared for the occasion.
LOTTERY
Buttevant Socer Club promotes a weekly local lottery draw to help finance the clubs’ expenses and activities. The winning or sharing of the substantial monetary jackpot rests on the choice of four lucky numbers to match the four lucky numbers drawn on draw night. The lottery jackpot now stands at €18,600 and will continue to rise until won by some lucky entrant. The draw takes place weekly on Thursday night at an appointed local public venue. CONFIRMATION
Young people from the parish of Buttevant are currently preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation. Many ceremonies are being organised to prepare the candidates for this auspicious occasion. A ceremony of light in preparation for the ceremony was held on Sunday April 15th in Saint Marys’ Church Buttevant. The sacrament. Of Confirmation will be administered to the worthy candidates on Thursday May 3rd at 11.00a.m.
BINGO
The weekly bingo session continues in Buttevant on Monday night in the local G.A.A. Hall with numerous monetary prizes to be won. There is a substantial bingo jackpot to be won as well as an in-house lottery and an extra sheet game. There is also 50/50 draw for attendees. The bingo jackpot is now approaching €32250- and will be raised accordingly if not won until some lucky player strikes gold. The games get under way at 8.30p.m.
COMMUNION
Pupils from the national primary schools in the parish are currently in preparation for their first Holy Communion. This is a very special occasion for the recipients and children from Buttevant will receive the sacrament in Buttevant Church on Saturday May 12th. 2018 at11.00a.m. Best wishes for the occasion is wished to all the worthy communicants.
SOCCER CLUB
Buttevant Soccer Club is again this year promoting their annual summer camp for 2018. The camp will take place from July16th. 2018 to July 20th. 2018 inclusive. the camp is open to boys and girls between the ages of 6 years to 12 years only. The feewhich includes a soccer kit is €70 per child and €60 for the 2nd. and subsequent children. Entry forms can be had from the clubhouse where fees can also be paid. ENNIS TRACK SPORTS–Four of our older Juveniles travelled to Ennis last Sunday to compete in their annual open sports and all came home with trophies as follows: Girls U14: Isabelle Kellegher1st in 800m, 3rd in 80m sprint. Girls U15: Aoife O’Brien- 3rd in 800m, 4th in 100m sprint. U15: Irene Kellegher- 3rd in 100m. Girls U18: Anna Kellegher: 1st in 1500m (U20). Well done to everyone for travelling and competing.

Congress was held at Carrig on Shannon, co Leitrim last Saturday and the only thing of competition importance resulting from it is that a Womens 28LB weight for distance for Junior, Under 23, Senior and Masters is to be introduced at All-Ireland Level.
