WHAT a day the Muskerry Special Olympics Club had on Saturday last, May 12, at the Munster Games in CIT. All the athletes put in some very hard training over the last few months and their efforts paid off. A huge medal haul was brought home.

Denis Buckley had a fantastic day. He competed in the Mini Javelin first and was thrilled to win the silver medal for this division. He then went on to the 100m final and again he raced up the track and won the gold medal. A day to remember for Denis.

Ian Cahalane (right) competed in the games for the first time and his beaming smile told its own story. Ian competed in the Mini Javelin and again all his training was rewarded. He was presented the gold medal. He then competed in the 100m and finished in third place. He was a very happy boy going home. Cathy Dullea was ready to test her speed on the track and she did not fail. She firstly competed in the 200m and came flying down the track to win the gold medal. Then she competed in the 100m and battled hard to the finish line and was rewarded with the silver medal. Cathy has been selected to compete in the Ireland games as part of Team Munster in June in Dublin. She will compete in the 100m, 200m and the relay at this competition. Katie Malone also ran very well in the 200m. She too battled hard down the home straight and was rewarded with the silver medal. She then took to the track in the 100m and was up against very tough competition but was rewarded with the fifth-place ribbon. Katie has also been selected to compete in the Ireland games in Dublin in June and she will compete in the 100m and the 200m.

Eoin Nagle put all his hard work at training to good use when he competed in the 100m.

After an indifferent start he fought back hard and crossed the finish line in first place. A fantastic achievement for Eoin. Eoin also did very well in the Mini Javelin.

John Buckley was another athlete who was in top form. John competed in the mini Javelin where he finished in first place and then went on to compete in the 100m. Again, after a fantastic battle to the finish line, John was awarded the bronze medal.

Ciara Dineen could not sleep at the excitement of competing at the Munster games and she too had a fantastic day. She competed in the 200m first and pushed herself to the limit and was rewarded with the gold medal. She then went on to compete in the 100m and battled hard in this race also and finished with a fifthpace ribbon.

Michael O’Donoghue was very excited to be competing in the Munster race also and he took to the longer races. He competed in the 400m and ran superbly, winning the silver medal. Michael then went on to the 200m where he again sprinted all the way home and was rewarded with the silver medal. He was a very happy young man going home.

Kevin O’Donoghue also had a fantastic day. Like his brother Michael, he competes in the longer events. Kevin competed in the 200m and fought off stiff competition to finish in third place. He also ran extremely well in the 400m.
