Champions beaten by Kilshannig in JAFC

REIGNING champions Buttevant suffered a defeat in the opening roundSynergy Fermoy Credit Union JAFC to Kilshannig at Churchtown on Friday evening. A scintillating display by Cork senior football panellist Killian O’Hanlon saw Kilshannig dominate from the throw in and the outcome was never in any real doubt. O’Hanlon on the ‘40 played havoc with the Buttevant defence and he kicked some great points along with a goal in the seventh minute when he soloed through for 50 yards. The same player goaled from the penalty spot when Conor McMahon was fouled in the 13th minute. Two minutes later Dermot and Jack Twomey worked well for Eoin O’Sullivan who goaled.

Further pressure saw Killian O’Hanlon solo through and place Conor McMahon who pointed and put his side 3-5 to 0-0 clear. Buttevant had their first score in the 22nd minute when Tadhg O’Sullivan placed Brian O’Shaughnessy who pointed. O’Shaughnessy followed with a pointed free. Kieran Twomey followed with a point for the winners. Kevin Lenahan had a point from play and a free for Buttevant. Good play in the 28th minute by Dermot and Jack Twomey led to a great Killian O’Hanlon point. At the break the winners led 3-8 to 0-4.

Kilshannig lost Conor McMahon to a second yellow on the resumption and so were down to 14 players. Killian O’Hanlon pointed again for the winners. Buttevant had points by Mark Lenahan and Ryan Fowley. Kilshannig lost Killian O’Hanlon through injury. Buttevant came strong they forced a number of frees that Brian O’Shaughnessy converted. By the end of the third quarter the lead was 11 points 3-10 to 0-8.

Kilshannig had just a single point in the last quarter by Jack Twomey while Buttevant had six in this period by Brian O’Shaughnessy 0-5 (frees) and Denis O’Sullivan. Buttevant now meet Liscarroll-Churchtown Gaels in the losers section.
