Strong second half sets Ballyhooly on their way to JAFC win over Killavullen

Ballyhooly 1-14 Killavullen 0-8

A DOMINANT second half display by Ballyhooly set them on their way to the knockout stages of the Synergy Fermoy Credit Union JAFC when they ran out worthy winners over Killavullen at Kildorrery on Saturday. Following a keenly contested opening half little separated the teams.

Killavullen had the better start and helped by three points inside the opening five minutes by the hardworking Charlie Lillis (2) and Sean O’Regan they raced into a 0-3 to no score lead.

Ballyhooly quickly adjusted to the pace and had their opening score in the 8th minute when Jake Mehigan and Cathal O’Keeffe combined well for Seamus Roche who kicked over. Killavullen responded with a point by Pat Angland following good work by Seamus Fox to restore a three point cushion.

As the half went on the Ballyhooly challenge grew in stature with Darragh O’Reilly, James Roche, Diarmuid Linehan, Seamus Roche, Fintan Linehan, Cathal O’Keeffe, David O’Brien and Jake Mehigan very much to the fore.

A period of sustained pressure had them back on level terms at 0-4 each by the 18th minute. Scores were at a premium for the remainder of the half with just one more score recorded when Cathal O’Keeffe pointed a free for Ballyhooly in the 26th minute and it helped them hold a slender lead at the interval.

On the changeover Killavullen levelled matters within seconds of the throw in when Charlie Lillis pointed. They moved ahead moments later when Michael Fresh and Billy Norris combined well to set up Ian O’Gorman to score a great point.

Just when Killavullen looked in a good position they were unable to build on their slight lead and instead it was Ballyhooly that gained total control from here inspired by Darragh O’Reilly at wing-back with their midfield duo of Seamus Roche and Diarmuid Linehan were also very effective. Points by Cathal O’Keeffe, Fintan Linehan and Darragh O’Reilly moved them 0-8 to 0-6 in front before they struck for the only goal of the game in the 39th minute when a Killavullen attack was intercepted with the ball being cleared down the field at speed resulting in Dylan Walsh finishing to the net from a tight angle.

The winners never looked back from here. In the last 20 minutes they tagged on some great points by Cathal O’Keeffe, Fintan Linehan, Darragh O’Reilly, Gerry O’Connor and Jake Mehigan to run out decisive winners.
