Enjoy a Father’s Day walk for MS Ireland in the stunning Galtee’s

- BILL BROWNE

THE Fermoy branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland (MSI) will hold their annual 2018 Galtee Walk fundraiser on Sunday, June 17.

Held each year on the third Sunday in June (Fathers Day), the walk is the group’s main fundraiser offering people the chance to enjoy some of the most stunning scenery Munster has to offer under the guidance of experienced hill walkers.

This, according to branch secretary Joe Tobin, makes the event accessible for groups and families seeking to enjoy a fun day out exploring “the splendour of the Galtee’s in all their breathtaking majesty”.

He said that in addition to enjoying a great day out, the Galtee Walk raises much needed funds that “enable and empower people affected by Multiple Sclerosis to live the life of their choice to its full potential”.

“MS is one of those diseases that has many different forms and can take various paths through a person’s lifetime making each person’s journey individual,” said Joe.

He said that in recent years scientific research has provided a number of treatment options using disease modifying therapies that are tailored to the individual and can assist in altering the course of the disease.

“It is in supporting research programmes through MS Ireland that we gain invaluable information about this disease and possible treatments. MS Ireland, through their 34 voluntary Branches throughout Ireland, provides a number of valuable supports and service to people and their families living with the challenges of MS,” said Joe.

“This is our main fundraiser of the year, so having the support of the public means that we can reach out to more members of the community and offer them the support and services they need. By taking part in the walk people will also be helping to fund scientific research into the causes of MS, its management and a cure for the condition,” he added.

Now in its 36th year, the Galtee Walk will get underway at the foot of the Galtee Mountains at the car park on the Black Road, Sheheenarinky. The estimated 1,000 participants will cover a course of approximately four miles before returning to the start point where refreshments will be available.

“We are looking for volunteers, preferably with hill-walking experience, to assist our stewards on the mountain and on traffic management duties over two time slots from 8am to 12.30pm and from 12.30pm to 5pm,” said Mary.
