Success at Vex 1Q Robotics

-

Each year, Fifth Class students are delighted to represent Gaelscoil Thomáis Daibhís in the Vex IQ robotics competition which is designed to make STEM, robotics and coding fun for students.

The Gaelscoil has participated very successfully in this competition over the past three years, winning the All-Ireland STEM project and Team Challenge awards twice, not to mention the All-Ireland Design and the Overall Excellence awards.

Following on from this, they featured on an RTE programme, entitled ‘Will A Robot Take My Job?’.

The Gaelscoil’s ‘Club Róbó’ is going from strength to strength with children seeking to work through their lunch breaks and queueing up to attend the weekly robotics workshops after school where they use an array of skills, including engineering, building, computer programming, problem solving and science to build and programme robots.

In addition, softer skills are fostered through team working, critical thinking, communication, project management, presenting to a team of judges, and much more.

We’ve no doubt that 2018/2019 will afford the Gaelscoil another opportunity to capitalise on their marvellous successes to date.

Who knows where this generation of coders and robot builders will end up? They may well become CEOs of high tech companies in Silicon Valley or start its equivalent right here in Mallow.

As Walt Disney once said: ‘If you dream it, you can do it’.
