Marquee back for another year

- BILL BROWNE

THE annual ‘Live at the Amrquee’ music and comedy festival will kick off tonight (Thursday) with a concert by Irish rockers and festival favourites Kodaline.

Now in its 14th year, Live at the Marquee has gone from strength-to- strength, with a veritable ‘who’s who’ of the Irish and global music industry having played the festival since its first outing in 2005.

This year will be no different, with acts of the calibre of A-Ha, The Script, Don McLean, Alanis Morrisette and Dara O’Briain to name but a few set to play a total of 22 gigs at the Docklands Venues over the space of more than a month.

The man behind the concept, Peter Aiken of Aiken Promotions, was back in Cork this week to officially kick-off the 2018 edition of the festival and said he was ‘very excited’ by the line-up.

Highlighst will include ‘Krautrock’ pioneers Kraftwerk and US singer/songwriter Jack Johnson, both of who will be playing Cork for he first time. They will be joined by other acts including Irish singer/ songwriter Gavin James and Chic (featuring Nile Rogers), both of whom are no strangers to the Marquee having played the festival before.

“We are very excited to be bringing Kraftwerk and Jack Johnson to Cork for the first time, particulaly as these will be their only Irish concerts this summer,” said Mr Aiken.

He said that Jack Johnson’s Cork date will be the first time he has played in Ireland since 2006 and that Kraftwerk’s show would be “something special” for fans of the groundbreaking German electronic band.

“The Kraftwerk concert will be a big 3-D show, with everyone being given 3-D glasses when they arrive. Big screens, big lights – its going to be incredible,” said Mr Aiken.

“As we’ve seen in the past, Cork audiences are huge fans of Gavin James and Nile Rogers too, so we are absolutely delighted to have the four of them coming to Cork,” he added.
