Cardiac Support Group information evening

- BILL BROWNE

HAVING recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of its foundation, the Cardiac Support Group North Cork (CSGNC) will hold its next information evening next Monday at 8pm in the Mallow Daycare Centre.

The group was formed in 2008 by people who had experienced cardiac problems with the help and encouragement of Mairead Lehane, a cardiac nurse specialist at the Mallow General Hospital.

Spokesman Paddy Lane said that as no such group existed at the time, its founders felt it was important that people were provided with a mechanism through which cardiac patients and their relatives could seek support and advice.

“Over the intervening years we have become a well-recognised name within the region, holding eight events each year covering a wide variety of issues such as fitness, diet, medications, first aid and new health awareness trends,” said Mr Lane.

“We have also been very fortunate have had a number leading cardiologists grace us with their presence and wisdom over the years,” he added.

Mr Lane said unexpected interruption to the health of an individual through a cardiac event can be daunting leading to a major knock in their self confidence.

“This where the support group plays a vitally important role. Through the continued contact with Mairead Lehane at Mallow Hospital, new patients are introduced to the cardiac support group many of whom choose to become members and have enjoyed the ‘family-like’ support offered to them,” said he said.

Next Monday’s meeting will feature a presentation by Citizens Advice on the subject of entitlements.

“It will be an opportunity for people to get information that could be of benefit to them in the future. As always, the public are welcome to attend the meeting,” said Mr Lane.
