U-14 League: Clann na nGael (Drimoleague) 1-8 Macroom 6-7.

ON a warm evening the game was played on a well-manicured pitch. Two even teams keenly contested the first half. Marcin Oleksi opened the scoring with a goal and Macroom added four points before the break. Drimoleague, with clever forward play, replied with five points.

Just before the break, they goaled and led by 1-5 to 1-4 at half-time. Resolute defending and luck helped the Macroom cause.

Immediately on the resumption, Macroom took control and scored 1-2 without reply. They held this advantage with an exchange of points up to the 45th minute mark and four quick goals, to the delight of selector Tony Saga O’Sullivan, in the next 10 minutes killed the contest.

Jonah Dervin was solid in goal, the backs were resolute and Cian Noonan and Liam McSweeney were excellent. Rowan Mullane, Ben Herlihy and Conor Coleman were staunch defenders and did not concede a second goal. Robert Lucey had a very good second half. Brian Healy and Mark Hunt were superb all through, and Mark was top scorer with 3-2.

James Slattery, Darren Sweeney, Cameron Murphy, Ronan Morey and Oisín O’Sullivan did well in the forward line. Marcin took his goal with aplomb.

MACROOM visited Ballynoe for what was thought to be a first match between teams from the clubs.

On a lovely evening and a beautiful sod, St Catherine’s started the better and got two early goals.

Macroom steadied after this and the half-time score was 2-2 to Macroom’s 0-2. Macroom pressed on the resumption but were unable to find the net. St Catherine’s finished the stronger and got two more goals before the end.

Bobby Murphy was good in goal and was not at fault for any of their goals. Davey Burke and Aidan Lynch were superb in the full back line and were ably assisted by Ryan Sabas and Jamie Murphy. Oisín O’Sullivan and Mark Condon did well at midfield and all the forwards tried hard. The absence of key players lessened Macroom’s chances.
