Close win for Doneraile over Mallow

DONERAILE held out for a close win over Mallow in the Cavanagh’s Fermoy Division 1 HL at Mallow on Tuesday evening. Exchanges were close all through with the sides level on three occasions. Michael Maher opened the scoring with a pointed free for Mallow. Doneraile were level by the third minute when Cillian Good pointed.

Mallow tagged on a pointed free by Rory Downey with Michael Maher placing Conor Hannon for a long range point. John Cronin soloed through from midfield and struck a great point. Mallow were 0-4 to 0-2 clear when Barry John Ryan pointed from long range. Lee O’Shea kept Doneraile in touch with a pointed ‘65’.

Mallow gained supremacy for a period. Rory Downey added two points with Michael Maher working well for Michael O’Rourke who struck a great point. Lee O’Shea poin ted for Doneraile under pressure as Mallow held a 0-7 to 0-4 lead after 22 minutes. Doneraile finished the half well. Lee O’Shea pointed two frees with Mallow having an injury time point when Rory Downey worked hard for Michael Maher who gave his side an interval lead 0-8 to 0-6.

Early on the resumption Doneraile hit the front when Michael O’Rourke placed James O’Callaghan for a goal. Lee O’Shea followed with two points as Doneraile moved 1-8 to 0-8 ahead Further dominance by Doneraile saw them go five clear when Lee O’Shea and Michael O’Rourke tagged on a point each. Mallow put in a great late rally. Fionn Moynihan pointed and Jimmy Glynn cut the lead to a goal with a great point. In the 5lst minute Michael Maher goaled from a 21-metre free. They were also level at 1-11 apiece.

The winners edged ahead again with Lee O’Shea and John Cronin adding points as the game moved into the c losing moments. In the 58th minute Rory Downey pointed a free with Ross McCarthy replying as Doneraile held a two point lead. Michael Maher pointed for Mallow. They missed a few good scoring chances in injury time with Doneraile holding out by the narrowest of margins.
