ATHLETIC CLUB NOTES

GREAT RESULTS FROM JUVENILES: Four juvenile athletes travelled to Castleisland on Saturday last to compete in the Munster Team Championships and came home very happy children. At under 9 level Emma O=92Connell and Clara Whelan were teamed up in the long jump and the 60m sprint. In the long jump, they both outjumped the rest of the athletes 3.15m and 3.25m respectively, making a grand total of 6.4m. This was the perfect start to the day and both were on a high as they lined up for their heats of the 60m sprint. After two great races in which Clara won her heat and Emma was second in hers, as a team they won the silver medals. What a fantastic and deserved result. Well done girls. At under 11 we had the Finnegan twins, Sarah and Lauren who in spite of great runs by both girls, their combined results were not enough to put them into the medals. Their long jump was a different story, they improved their jumps in each round to finish up with the bronze medals in a very tight competition with jumps of 3.59 and 3.50 respectively for a total of 7.09m. This was another great result. Well done girls.

These results have qualified all four to go forward to compete in the All-Ireland Team Championships in Tullamore Co Offally on Sunday, 1 July where Emma and Clara will again compete in the long jump and sprint and Sarah and Lauren in the long jump. We look forward to a great day.

SENIORS AND MASTERS: On Sunday, club members were again in action, this time at senior and masters, men and women, Munster Championships at Castleisland. Overall number of participants was up, which resulted in a long, long day. Club wise, Liscarroll=92s representation was smaller than usual but that did not deter those who travelled from giving of their best. Jordan Mason was competing at Munster Senior Level for the first time, but did well, in spite of not being in the medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m and Anna Kellegher also competing at this level for the first time had a new personal best time in the 800m. Vickie Cusack had mixed success on the day, competing in five events, with the following results- 2nd in the javelin and triple jump, 3rd in shotput and long jump and 4th in weigh for distance, a new event for senior women. Jedh Leahy 0/55 masters finished 2nd in discus, 2nd in 100m and 3rd in 200m. Tim Fitzpatrick 0/75 finished 1st in hammer, discus, 28lb weight, 2nd in shot and 3rd in javelin.

Cross Country League: A cross country league for juvenile athletes will be organised by Cork County AAI Board and will take place at the Boards grounds in Riverstick on September 1, 15 and 29. The format and further details will be announced later.
