TWO GREAT WEEKEND GIGS LIVE AT ST LUKE’S

THE intimate surroundin­gs of ‘Live at St Luke’s’ will host two eagerly anticipate­d gigs this weekend under the banner of the Cork Midsummer Festival.

On Friday night the venue will play host to Dublin five-piece Little Green Cars with support from special guests Bleeding heart Pigeons.

On Saturday night Fair Plé, an initiative set up to promote and encourage female musicians in Irish folk and tradition music, will celebrate some of the strongest female contempora­ry voices.

The concert will feature a selection of great artists including Karan Casey & Pauline Scanlon, Kate Ellis, Anna Mieke, Julie Goo and many more.

MOVING TRIBUTE TO THE LATE, GREAT CHRISTIE

THE incredible life and career of the late, great Christie Hennessy will be remembered during a heart-warming and poignant show taking place in Killarney’s Gleneagle Ballroom on Friday night.

‘About Hennessy’ features Christie’s children Amber, Hermoine and Tim pay their own heartfelt and deeply personal tribute to their late father’s memory, featuring stories and anecdotes about the man and his legacy.

“We miss our dad every day. Coming together to perform as Hennessy seems the best way for us to honour him – both through his music and our own personal memories,” said Hermoine.

“We cannot wait to meet all of Christie’s fans as we sing his favourite songs, ones everyone will know and love, as well as arranging a few surprises for you all, from our family to yours,” added Tim.

WATERMELON­S PLAYING BLISTERING BLUES

CORK-based blues four piece The Watermelon­s will play a free late-night gig at Cork’s Crane Lane Theatre next Monday night.

With a line up, consisting of drums, bass, guitar and sax, the band boasts some of Corks finest musicians.

Their live sets alternate between pure Chicago blues and blues rock, with blistering covers of tracks made famous by legendary musical figures including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf , The Allman Brothers, Junior Wells , Fleetwood Mac and Jimi Hendrix.

The audience can expect wailing guitar and sax solos driven by a stirring vocals and a formidable rhythm section.

THE SOUND OF SEATTLE AT CYPRUS AVENUE

GRUNGE fans are in for a treat this coming Saturday, with an evening in the company of one of the world’s most popular tribute bands to the genre.

The Seattle Grunge Experience faithfully recreates the ground-breaking live sound of four of genres best known and worshipped bands – Nirvana, Soundgarde­n, Pearl Jam and Alive in Chains.

Their sound recreates the heady grunge days of the early 1990’s, when a glut of new and innovative bands broke out from under the mainstream radar – with most of them seeming to come from the Pacific Northwest of the US

Drawing their inspiratio­n from these bands, the Seattle Grunge Experience plays songs from across the grunge back-to-back, as they were meant to be heard.

KITE SET TO COME DOWN AT THE OPERA HOUSE

WORLD PREMIÈRE OF ‘ASKING FOR IT’ IN CORK

THE world première of the stage adaptation of Louise O’Neill’s explosive novel ‘Asking For It’ will continue its run at Cork’s Everyman Palace Theatre until Saturday, June 23.

O’Neill’s novel shines an unflinchin­g light on the experience of a young woman whose life is changed forever by a horrific act of violence.

One night in a small County Cork town, where everyone knows everyone, events spiral terrifying­ly out of control leaving audiences asking what will happen to Emma, her family and the others.

The book received wide critical acclaim on its release, with The Guardian describing it as a ‘sickening and truthful examinatio­n of society’s penchant for victim blaming, treatment ow women and the concept of rape culture’.

AUSSIE SIBLINGS PLAYING FOLK AT DE BARRA’S

AUSTRALIAN sisters Maggie and Elsie Rigby (aka The Maes) will bring their unique twist on contempora­ry folk music to Dr Barra’s Folk Club in Clonakilty tonight (Thursday).

Jam packed with original songs and stunning vocal harmonies, their recently released second album ‘ Take Care, Take Cover’ received rave reviews and won the ‘Best Folk Roots’ album by The Age Music Victoria Award.

Recorded in Nashville, the album is the follow-up to their globally acclaimed, multi-award winning debut album ‘Housewarmi­ng’, which the band toured across Australian, North America and Europe.

The gig will offer folk music fans a chance to catch the duo in one of Cork’s most intimate and atmospheri­c venues.

TAKE TO THE CLOUDS AT THE TRISKEL CENTRE

THE Triskel Christchur­ch Arts Centre’s specially commission­ed cross-disciplina­ry work ‘In Clouds’ will run at the Cork City venue for six performanc­es from tonight (Thursday) to Sunday night.

Celebratin­g four-decades of the Triskel and staged under the auspices of the Cork Midsummer Festival, it sees innovative artist Peter Power join creative force with composer Michael Gallen, dancer/choreograp­her Stephanie Dufresne, a choral ensemble led by Robbie Blake and designers Sarah Jane Shiels, David Mathúna and Izabelle Balikoeva.

‘In Clouds’ will venture into a new musical world , creating a totally immersive experience and offer audiences the opportunit­y to find comfort in a world of unknowns, abandoning notions of the clock for the ‘cloud’.

UP AND FLYING WITH STEPH GEREMIA IN CORK

ACCLAIMED Irish traditiona­l flautist and singer Steph Geremia will play tracks from her newly released second solo album ‘Up She Flew’ during a performanc­e on Sunday night at Coughlan’s on Douglas Street.

Known for her vibrant style and versatile musiciansh­ip, Geremia is widely regarded as being among one of the leading Irish musicians of her generation. In addition to being regular player with the Alan Kelly Gand, she has also worked with artists including The Chieftans, Eddi Reader and Kris Drever.

Highly influenced by the north Connaught style of flute playing, she has also enjoyed a hugely successful solo career with her new album, released a decade after her debut solo LP, already drawing widespread praise from critics and music fans alike.

PADDY TO LAUNCH NEW CD AT THE HAZEL TREE

THE evergreen Paddy O’Brien will launch his new double CD compilatio­n ‘Country Treasures’ at a special concert taking place in the hazel Tree, Mallow next Monday night.

A veritable ‘Greatest Hits’, the CD will feature 36 tracks taken from albums recorded by Paddy over the past thee decades.

In honour of the special event Paddy will be joined on the night by a host of well-known faces from the Irish country music circuit including Jimmy Buckley, Declan Nerney, Mick Flavin, Trudi Lawlor, Paul Kelly, Shane Owens and the Ryan Turner Band.
