Dialogue on future of Europe set for Cork

- MARIA HERLIHY

THE European Union is reaching out to the people of Ireland for their views on what they can do for them with a series of town hall events.

To do this they will be running ‘Citizens’ Dialogues’ around the country, with one taking place in Cork on Monday, June 25. The event is asking people to offer their views on ‘ The Future of Europe’ and speakers on the night will include Deirdre Clune MEP, Cllr Deirdre Forde and Dr Mary C Murphy lecturer in politics with the Department of Government and Politics, University College Cork.

Ireland South MEP, Deirdre Clune said: “Ireland has been transformed by our membership of the European Union but a lot has changed since we first joined in 1973. The EU is looking to its citizens for guidance on what they want from the EU and how it can work better for them. They want to know how can the EU can support jobs and growth and how can it provide opportunities for our young people.

“They are also looking for views on what is the EU’s role in meeting the challenges of today’s globalised world, from climate change to international terrorism.”

The event will be held at Garryduff Sports Complex in Rochestown at 7pm on Monday next.
