Exciting ‘Quartet by Candlelight’ at St Colman’s

- BILL BROWNE

THE historic St Colman’s Church, Farahy (near Kildorrery) will be atmospheric setting for the latest recital in the ‘Concerts by Candlelight’ series of concerts next Sunday afternoon at 3pm.

Introduced a number of years ago by Jane Annersley, the series is inspired by the fact that the church has no electricity, hence the ‘candlelight’ tag which adds its own slice of special magic to the concerts.

The wonderful setting of St Colman’s has always added greatly to the virtuosity of the many great music ensembles that have performed there in past years and this should be no exception.

Sunday’s ‘Quartet by Candlelight’ recital will feature a performance by The Red Abbey String Quartet and will feature works by a number of popular composers including Haydn’s Quartet (OP.42) Shostakovich (No.3) and Dvorak (American).

The Quartet is comprised of four talented and exciting young string players from the CIT School of Music.

Kevin Jansson (violin), a student of Ruxandra Petcu Colan at the CIT, was joint winner of the 2015 NCH Young Musicians Award and has performed as soloist with the RTE Concert Orchestra, CIT CSM Chamber Orchestra, Cork Youth Orchestra and Dublin Symphony Orchestra.

A scholarship student, Kate Fleming studies violin with Eithne Willis and is a member of the Cork Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

Séamus Hickey studied violin at CIT and in the Conservatoire de Nantes with Constantin Serban. He also studies viola, plays traditional music and has twice been an All-Ireland finalist on the fiddle.

Zoë Nagle (cello) has won several prizes at national competitions and is a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

Tickets for the 3pm concert, priced at €15, are available from 025-32227, 087-6492514 and from the Kildorrery Community Development Office on 022-25777.
