It’s a lively and exciting summer in Macroom
You need never feel bored in Macroom, especially with the fine weather opening up the great outdoors, as we’ve been experiencing lately.
However, the undoubted beauty of the town apart, summer is a busy time in Macroom, where there’s lots going just right now, and coming up.
The ninth Daniel Kingston 5k memorial run/ walk takes place in Macroom this Thursday, June 21 at 8pm. Registration between 6pm and 7.45pm. A great evening is assured and for those who have never participated before it’s definitely recommended. Entry fee is €10 and refreshments are served in the sports complex afterwards.
All surplus proceeds go to Cork ARC - Cork cancer support house - a safe haven for people with cancer and their families, where one can find information, practical help and emotional help.
Daniel (25) passed away in 2009 from Hodgkin’s lymphoma and since then, family and friends have raised €225k in his memory. Each year there has been tremendous support from local race participants, businesses, clubs and volunteers.
From next week aspiring young filmmakers, aged 13 – 19, can experience a week long immersion in the skills required to make a film. Summer Film Making Programme 2018 takes place at Mc Egan College, Macroom on June 25-29. Participants in the programme will learn and experience a wide variety of different aspects of being a filmmaker in a hands-on, fun and interactive workshop. Work alongside professional filmmakers from Cork Film Centre, over five days to explore, learn and create short film.
Young people get to make a film and learn new skills to take home. It’s all about having fun, building confidence, encouraging creativity and self-expression. For many, this experience is creating pathways into college, university and the film industry. All will have an opportunity to showcase their short films at special Festival and Gala Film events.
Coming up later in the summer, Macroom FC is one of the Cork clubs chosen to host the FAI as the association comes to the Rebel County for its 2018 AGM on August 10 – 18. The major event will take place in Macroom on August 16 when a plaque will be unveiled to mark the 40th anniversary of the club’s founding and another plaque will remember deceased members.
It is hoped that luminaries of the soccer world will be among visitors to Macroom on that day, as well as CEO John Delaney and President Tony Fitzgerald. It’s a great occasion for Macroom FC and an opportunity to celebrate their service to the youth of the area and sport in general.
Meanwhile, all this month library will be exhibiting a number of beautiful pencil-drawings by local artist, Ann Mechelinck - O’Sullivan in a show entitled ‘Back to Basics’.
