Meaney’s passing will be rightly mourned by all

-

THERE was a great sense of shock and sadness on Thursday June 7 when news broke of the untimely death of James Meaney, Flemingstown, Mitchelstown.

The late James, who was in his 22nd year was very popular and very well known and liked. A former pupil at Ballindangan National School he then moved to Mitchelstown CBS where he sat his Leaving Certificate in 2015.

He was a very much into sport and was a keen hurler, footballer and rugby player. He was a key player with Mitchelstown CBS in both codes. He was also a very good Rugby player with Mitchelstown Rugby Club.

He was a member of the Harbour Rovers hurling side that won the North Cork JAHC titles of 2015 and 2016. He was a selector this year with the Harbour Rovers hurlers.

In 2017 he captained the Harbour Rovers in Under 21 A HC. He coached Mitchelstown Under 13 Rugby side a few years ago.

He was very interested in Kilkenny hurling and would attend many of their games with his family. One of his final games being at was the National Hurling League Final in April in Nowlan Park.

He was attending college being a PE and Maths student in Limerick. James had been in a battle with serious illness over the past two years which he bore with great dignity.

His popularity was borne out in the very large and represented attendance that attended the family home on Saturday and also on Sunday for the Requiem Mass and burial.

Interment took place to St Dominics Cemetery, Glanworth. There was a guard of honour by members of Glanworth GAA and Mitchelstown Rugby Club from Ballindangan Cross on Sunday as the cortège made its way to the Church of the Immaculate Conception Ballindangan.

After the Mass there was also a guard of honour in Glanworth from the Church to the graveyard. Members of both clubs shouldered his coffin draped in his club colours from the Church on route to his final resting place.

To his parents John and Martina (Nee Fitzmaurice) sisters Sinead, Rachel, brother John grandmother Joan Fitzmaurice, girl friend Lisa Hurley, the Hurley family, uncles, aunts, cousins extended family and a large circle of friends we tender our sincere sympathy.
