DILLON AN ELITE CHAMPION

Having ridden very well in the early season and then gotten his first Rás into his legs, Dillon Corkery has now become an Elite national champion. The former top junior, in his first season at U23 level, has won the National Criterium Championships in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. It is his maiden Irish elite title at his first time of asking; and he beat real quality on the line in the Lakeside Wheelers promotion.

Corkery (Gerard Cycles-DHL) pulled clear early in the competition with Damien Shaw of Holdsworth Pro Cycling. With two powerhouses off the front working well together, the race split in two almost from the gun.

One contest was out front to decide who’d take home gold or silver. And the rest were battling for bronze. But, without question, the night belonged to the young winner Dillon Corkery.

The 19-year-old from Banteer, Co Cork has now firmly announced his arrival. On the basis of what we have seen from him already in these first months out of the juniors, he is a real talent. He topped the podium ahead of a former national elite road race champion and a double reigning elite champion.

He won Rás Luimni and Rás Naomh Finian in the early weeks of the year; the latter in a long range solo move. He followed up those rides with top 10 placings on two stages of Kerry Group Rás Mumhan. And he would also take a top 10 on a stage of the Victus Tour of Ulster.

In Rás Tailteann he was 26th overall; with just seven Irish riders head of him in the final standings. On a special night for Banteer Paidi O Brien who has helped Dillon along his extraordinary career to date finished in a strong 5th position. Well done to both cyclists. Big well done also to Jennifer Bates in bringing home the Silver
