Two Cork players make finals in Tyrone

LOUGHMACRO­RY One Wall Complex in Tyrone produced an excellent weekend of One Wall Handball as their Ranked One Wall Tournament was decided last weekend commencing on Friday and running though to Sunday afternoon to complete their huge programme.

Players from many counties were successful in the different grades. Of the Cork players who competed just two made it to finals, Gearoid O’Connell, Mallow continued his great run of success in One Wall over the past few months as he added another title to his tally defeating Tipperary player David O’Brien in Mens C Final but just one ace 19 aces to 18.

Both players showed great determinat­ion to reach the final. Again the final was very close all through only one or two aces separating them with the Mallow player hanging on by just the one ace margin to get over the line.

The second final in which Cork was involved was Girls Under 13. After some tough games Sarah Walsh, Mallow booked here place in the final with Galway’s Emma Kinane coming though the other side.

Again it proved to be a very evenly matched contest with Kinane proving that bit stronger in the closing stages to fashion a 17 to 13 ace winning margin. In the two main grades in Loughmacro­ry Ladies Open Martina McMahon, Liimerick took the spoils defeating Fiona Tully, Roscommon in the Final.

In Mens Open Conor McElduff, Tyrone took the spoils defeating Martin Mulkerrins, Galway in a thrilling final 11 aces to 8 in a tie-break. On the domestic front 60/30 County championsh­ip games continue during the coming week, to decide the players to represent Cork in Munster championsh­ip.

Some grades of the provincial championsh­ip which involve players not travelling to Minnesota for World Championsh­ip are due to commence the last week of July while grades in which players travelling to the Worlds are involved are not due to commence until those players return from the US at end of August.

However to meet provincial deadlines it is necessary to have all county games and play-offs completed before the end of July. There are some county games down for decision in the coming week, commencing tonight Thursday in Cullen at 7pm both semi-finals of Junior B Singles are down for decision.

In the opening game David Walsh, Mallow plays the winner of John Hurley, Liscarroll and Jerry Cronin, Ballydesmo­nd, that game will be followed by the second semi-final in which Roger Casey, Boherbue plays Gearoid O’Connell, Mallow.

Date and venue for final will be decided following the semi-finals, but will be played within the next seven days. The coming week will be a busy one in Ballydesmo­nd club as they host their Annual Handball Summer Camp commencing on Monday next, July 9 and each day to Friday 13.

The Camp will run from 10am to 2pm each day catering for age groups 7 to 13 boys and girls. This camp has been very successful in recent years and next week should be no different.
