ATHLETIC CLUB

SUPER SUNDAY BY FAB FIVE AT ALL – IRELAND FINALS – Last weekend was another busy one on the athletics competition scene with three different competitions to cater for athletes. First up was the Cork Community Games on Saturday at which a number of our club athletes were in action, with some of them bringing home medals.

Sophie Perrott was first in the discus, Clara Whelan first in hurdles, Emma O’Connell first in 60m sprint, Emma Lehane second in 100m, Irene Kellegher second in long jump, Isobel Kellegher third in 800m.

Lauren and Sarah Finnegan competed well but were not in the top three of their events.

The next competition, also on Saturday was the All – Ireland Junior Championships which were held at Tullamore where Vickie Cusack was in action. Having just completed her Leaving Cert exams and just returned from a holiday, she was still in good enough form to win two silver medals, one in the javelin and the other in the 28lb weight for distance.

SUPER SUNDAY – Smalls clubs like Liscarroll do not have many opportunities to have two under-nine, two under-11 and one under-13 to compete in an All – Ireland Championship on the same day. On Sunday last, it actually happened two eight – year – old girls, Clara Whelan and Emma O’Connell were entered in two events and put on a top display. They started with the long jump, in which they jumped a combined total of 6.82m to win the gold medals. They then competed in the 60m sprint and were just out of a second medal, finishing in fourth place, two hundredths of a second behind the bronze medallists. They were really on form so, we say well done to them.

Another pair who happened to be twins also in action were Lauren and Sarah Finnegan, two 10 – year – olds who finished third in their Munster long jump were up there again for another set of medals. This time a set of bronze All – Ireland medals. Their combined total was 7.21m, a great achievement.

Johnny Murphy under-13 was in terrific form, when his two events, for which he was waiting for were not called till after 4 p.m. and at the same time. This was not good for nerves, but Johnny beat them off. His first event was the long jump, which he took in his stride, as he successfully jumped at all six attempts, finally with a jump of 4.77m to win the silver. No sooner was this over, when he had to report for high jump. Mentally he was set for any challenge, he jumped his best ever height at 1.48m for a second silver medal. This was a great display by him.

All in all, it was a terrific day for club, coaches and athletes, with five athletes bringing home six All – Ireland championship medals.

COUNTY BOARD LEAGUE - Round three of the Cork County Board Senior League took place at CIT Cork on 25, Monday last. Even though some members were absent for a variety of reasons, those that turned out made it a successful trip, competing in 100m and 400m sprints, 1500m middle distance, long jump, shotput and discus. In action were Siobhán Heffernan, Margaret Heffernan, Máire Goggin, Sinéad O’Reilly, Niamh Linehan, Anna Kellegher, Tim Fitzpatrick, Gerard Leahy and David Hamilton. The final round, round four will be held on Friday, July 20, when the events on offer will be 200m sprint, 800m and 3000m middle distance, high jump, hammer and javelin. Looking forward to a big turnout on the night.
