- BILL BROWNE ‘Tourist potential of Lee Valley must be realised’ MARIA HERLIHY

THE virtual hammer will come down on a number of inviting lots from Mallow and Kanturk during the upcoming Bid X1 online auctions of residential and commercial properties.

The six properties will be among more than 220 lots from around the country up for grabs during the auctions, which will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday, presenting potentially rich pickings for investors with a bit of spare cash to spend.

The four lots of local interest in Tuesday’s residential auction will include a pair of two-bedroom apartments in the centre of Mallow town, both of which will be up for grabs with a reserve not to exceed €100,000.

One of these, situated at The Towers, Fair Green, measures approximately 775 sq ft and is currently occupied under a lease subject to a current gross rent of €8,400 per annum. The second is a vacant ground-floor apartment at Bowling Green, Summerhill, measuring approximately 883 sq ft.

A reserve not to exceed €120,000 has been placed on a vacant, semi-detached, three-bedroom house at 9 Cedar Grove, Ballydaheen, Mallow. The 915 sq ft two-story house comes with front and rear gardens and off-street parking.

The final residential lot of local interest will be a 1,055 sq ft three-bedroom, semi-detached house at Ard na Gréine, Kanturk, with a reserve not to exceed €100,000. The property, which has a rear garden and off-street parking, is currently subject to a tenancy agreement with a current rent of €3,840 per annum.

Wednesday’s commercial auction will include two attractive properties in Kanturk, including the former Peppermill restaurant on Percival Street. Situated close to the junction of Church Street, the vacant mid-terrace unit is spread over two floors, measures approximately 1,056 sq ft and has a guide price of €40,000.

The other property, a mid-terrace, mixed-use building know locally as Deady’s, also on Percival Street, will be up for auction with a guide price of €20,000.

Spread over two floors, the vacant 2,800 sq ft property, which is in need of attention, is comprised of a ground floor retail unit and an overhead three-bedroom apartment.

Bidding deposits of €4,500 will be required for each of the listed lots included in both auctions.

That was the view of Deputy Aindrias Moynihan (FF), who was commenting after receiving a reply from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport on the progress being made to promote the Lee Valley as part of the Wild Atlantic Way region.

“Anyone who lives in the area knows that the Lee Valley is one of the most beautiful parts of the island. It’s now essential that the marketing of the Wild Atlantic Way doesn’t stick rigidly to the route but is expanded to include areas close it. This will ensure that all parts of the country can benefit from the increased number of foreign and domestic tourists visiting,” said Deputy Moynihan,

He said he has been informed that Fáilte Ireland will be hosting a number of workshops in this area in the coming months to explain how opportunities can be maximised and to make the most of the Wild Atlantic Way region brand.

“This is very positive, and I would encourage local businesses to engage with the process to see how they can align themselves to the Wild Atlantic brand to ensure that they benefit as much as possible,” he said. He added that rural Cork is an “ideal tourist venue.”

“It’s really important that people don’t just see Cork as a city to arrive into and depart from. Keeping tourists in Cork and, in particular, in rural Cork is vitally important to many businesses in small towns and villages...It’s a welcome move to see Tourism Ireland seeking to market Cork as a stand-alone tourist location,” he said.
