Community gathers to bid popular principal Susan a fond farewell

- BILL BROWNE

AN entire community came out recently to mark the retirement of a lady who, for almost four decades, has helped guide hundreds of young people from the Analeentha area through their formative years.

It was very much celebratory occasion as people gathered to honour the contribution of Susan O’Keeffe after 39 years as a teacher, 16 of those as principal, on the occasion of her retirement from Analeentha National School.

Pupils past and present, their families, staff, people from the local community and current and former board of management members gathered to pay tribute to Mrs O’Keeffe for her many years of dedicated service.

The occasion commenced with a Mass of celebration at St Michael’s of the Archangel, celebrated by Fr Seán Corkery and Fr Joe O’Keeffe, before speeches and presentations in the adjoining school.

Gifts presented to Mrs O’Keeffe included a willow tree that was planted in the school grounds – representing her love of nature and the environment – and book of memories containing messages from pupils.

The chair of the parents association, Alex Grassick, spoke warmly about all that Mrs O’Keeffe has done for the school and the pupils under her care. Mary Crowley spoke in glowing terms on behalf of past parents about the academic achievements and the solid foundation Mrs O’Keeffe had provided them ahead of secondary school.

Deputy principal Deirdre Leahy said that, throughout her career, Mrs O’Keeffe showed extraordinary passion and commitment to her goal that each and every pupil realised their full potential.

“She ensured they would leave our school fully rounded and capable young people,” said Ms Leahy. “Her strength and capability as a principal ensured that every child flourished, and she was extremely committed to creating and nurturing a positive school ethos. Everyone associated with the school and the wider community would like to wish Ms O’Keeffe every blessing for a long, happy and healthy retirement from teaching,” Ms Leahy added.
