Best foot forward for COPE - and craic

- KANTURK CALLING TIMMY LYNCH timmylynch@eircom.net

THE ninth annual sponsored walk /run in aid of The COPE Foundation will take place on Sunday, July 22 in Kanturk.

There will be a 7 mile walk/ run which starts at 2pm and 4 mile walk will commence at 2.30 p.m. All events start and end at the COPE Foundation on the Freemount Road, Kanturk.

The walk was started by the Higgins Family. When Margaret’s sister, Julia Mary Dunne, passed away they wanted to do something to say thank you to Cope Foundation for the love and attention that was shown to Julia Mary while she was with them.

Over the last eight years they have raised over €70,000 of which they are very proud. The monies raised have gone towards different projects at the Cope Residential unit in Kanturk. The most obvious of these projects is the development of a sensory walk in their garden. This walk has proven to be a great success and is really enjoyed by the residents.

The highlight of the day is the barbecue and live music that awaits all the runners and walkers at the finishing line. Last year over 300 people enjoyed the festivities.

The organisers are delighted to say that Jerry and Mary O’Riordan and Tim Browne will provide the live music again this year, and Aileen Lehane and her troupe will be doing their fabulous face painting.

Each year, due to the enormous generosity of businesses and individuals, the group has been able to keep the expenditure for the day to an absolute minimum. All food and drinks for the day have been generously donated or sponsored. “We can’t express our gratitude to everyone for their continued support over the past nine years,” said Margaret.

“Everybody is welcome to what has always been a great day of fun and laughter.”

There is no entry fee but donations can be made on the day.

And, once again, the date is Sunday, July 22.
