The Rock is safer and locals are thrilled with their new footpath
ROCKCHAPEL natives who are devotees of health and leisure are “totally thrilled” with the brand new section of footpath which was officially opened last week.
Neily Curtin, who is Chairman of the local Community Council told the Corkman that there had been great interest in extending the existing footpath as far as the group of houses near the former creamery and then on to the junction at Martin Stacks to create the Stagmount loop which was already being used by a number of people. “The dangerous part of that walk was where this new footpath is now,” Neily explained.
Speaking at the official opening, Neily thanked everybody who played a role in bringing this project to fruition. In total, the new Footpath cost €106,200 for which Knockacummer Wind Farm contributed €86,200 and Cork County Council €20,000.
“The path itself is 1.4km or .87miles and should take 17 minutes to walk one way, it is also part of a bigger and more difficult walk around Stagmount which is 5.2km or 3.25 miles which according to Google should take 1hr 11mins” Neily explained.
Fr. Denis Stritch PP blessed the new Footpath and the ribbon was cut by Liz Casey of Brookfield Renewable.
Regular walkers commended the efforts of all those who worked in tandem to put the path in place saying that now it is really safe to do the entire walk even after dark.
“The people from the western suburbs of the Rock can even walk home safely now after a pint or two” Neily Curtin said.
