Classic is a huge success

- BY JOHN TARRANT

BRILLIANT weather added to the success of the sixth annual Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club Classic last Sunday.

Covering 55/85/110km distances, proceeds from the 2018 staging goes towards supporting the flourishing Sliabh Luachra Juvenile Club. Fortunately, the prevailing high pressure system contributing to a heat wave and temperatures of 30 Degrees Celsius eased somewhat for the duration of the staging across Duhallow.

The event hosted for the first time in 2013 is in memory of the Paud O’Leary and Willie Reen and participation was seen as ideal preparation for cyclists taking part in the Ring of Kerry Charity cycle this weekend and for many, its concluded their training for the big event.

The Sliabh Luachra cycle covered much of the greater Duhallow Region, the 110km schedule took in Millstreet, Mushera, Kilcorney, Rathcoole, Clonbanin and a return to Rathmore with Juvenile Officer Tim Murphy expressing delight at the turn-out.

“From the Cork side of the border, we have members drawn from Millstreet, Cullen, Knocknagree, Ballydesmond, Rockchapel, Newmarket and Dromtariffe. New members are always welcome and we begin the cycles from various outlets to accommodate our members,” said Tim from Knocknagree.

Members helped steward the Classic route that entailed distances over a wide catchment area either side of the county bounds.

“Thanks go to the marshals, volunteers, Gardai, Red Cross, support cars, motorcycles, sponsors and food stations who ensured the event went according to plan,” said Tim.

Many of the Sliabh Luachra participants tackled the Ring of Kerry including Freemount’s DD Nagle.

“This was be my 23rd year involved, the Sliabh Luachra hosting, the ideal preparation, I cycled in support of Brú Columbanus, the home from home” accommodation for relatives of seriously ill patients,” he said.
