ATHLETIC CLUB NOTES

RIA MURPHY SHINES AT TULLAMORE – At the All – Ireland Juvenile Championships at Tullamore, Co Offaly last Saturday Ria Murphy was our only medal winner. She won the silver in the under-16 long jump. She has only been doing long jump over a matter of weeks and was a deserving recipient of the medal. She also had a good run in the 100m sprint. Isobel Kellegher, Irene Kellegher and Aoife O’Brien did not enjoy similar success in their events but like all our athletes, we thank them and congratulate them for good performances on a very warm day.

BEREAVEMENTS – The sympathy of the officers and members of Liscarroll Athletic Club is extended to the family, relatives and friends of the late Margaret (Peggie) Collins, Lackaroe, who died during the week.

To the family, relatives and friends of the late Micheál Murphy, Farthingville, Dromina, who died last weekend.

To the family, relatives and friends of the late Denis (Denny) O’Doherty of Kyle Carroll, Liscarroll and formerly of Tullylease, who also died last weekend. May they rest in peace.

Come along on any of the nights above and remember that there is no nightly training charge. Contact 087 – 6888591.

DROMCOLLOGHER SPORTS – As usual some members of the club travelled to Dromcollogher for their annual sports. Our numbers were down this year, but those who travelled did very well. In the girls under-eight Clara Whelan and Emma O’Connell competed in two separate heats, both competing in the final and finishing first and third respectively. They then took on the under-10s and finished first and third again. Not content with that, they both took on the under-10s in the 200m, a race which they dominated from the start to finish first and second. Clara was declared joint top athlete of the sports. The full results of the meet is as follows.

Girls under-8: Clara Whelan – first 80m, first under-10 100m, first under-10 200m.

Girls under-8: Emma O’Connell – third 80m, second under-10 100m, second under-10 200m.
