Action packed weekend in store in Mukserry
THIS weekend in Muskerry there will be championship action in the premier Muskerry competitions and we will hopefully be presented with some exciting fare.
The third round Ross Oil junior football championship game on Saturday evening involving Ballincollig and Aghinagh should produce a good hour’s football, but Ballincollig appear to be particularly strong and well prepared at the moment.
In their first round victory over Blarney they were not at their best, but they displayed exceptionally good form on Monday last in the league when they secured a resounding league victory over Beál Athan Ghaorthaidh.
Players at their disposal are Stephen O’Donoghue, Noel Galvin, Rob Bourke, Brian Cotter, Robbie Noonan, John Kelly, James O’Reilly, and Niall Allen so the team certainly looks formidable. Aghinagh will give it their best shot with Declan Ambrose, Donal Corkery, Luke O’Leary and Liam Twohig likely to be to the forefront of their challenge.
There is a second round junior football championship game arranged for Macroom on Sunday where Dripsey will be hoping for a victory over Beál Athan Ghaorthaidh. The former secured a junior (B) football mid Cork and county championship victory in their year of entry in 2005 and following same they were leading contenders in (A) championship success for a number of years.
They suffered defeat in three finals and they have slipped back as a force during the last few years. A win on Sunday would do much for their morale and they appear to have the potential to overcome the challenge of the second choice Beál Athan Ghaorthaidh football squad. Long serving servants like Diarmuid O’Riordan, John Carey and Mark O’Sullivan are likely to be leading figures in Dripsey’s effort for a victory. Reigning champions in junior hurling Cloughduv will also be in action on Sunday evening and they will face Kilmichael the team they defeated in last year’s final. This current second round encounter is arranged for 7pm and Kilmichael who have to line out without the services of Peter Kelleher will be up against it.
Conor Cotter will be a leading figure in their quest for a historic victory and others who should figure prominently are Stephen O’Leary, Micheál Masters, Shane Foley, Donal Kelly and Brendan Cotter. It will be a surprise of they cause an upset however and players like Eoin Clifford, Mark Verling, Andrew Cronin, Donal Corkery, Sean O’Connor and James Moynihan should figure prominently in taking Cloughduv to another semi-final.
