Stage is set for a much expanded Scullys Fest ‘18

MUSIC, WORKSHOPS, FILM AND CRAIC ALL ON THE MENU

FOR the last 14 years traditiona­l music has been the hallmark of Scullys Fest in Newmarket and this year will be no different.

The festival which will run from Thursday, August 9 until Monday, August 13 and it is regarded as both a celebratio­n and an effort to strength local music and create an awareness of the unique rich culture of Sliabh Luachra.

There will be a huge range of events which will include concerts, music and dance workshops, drama, poetry, singing, Art and Film.

This year the organisers which include Eilis Hourigan said they have added more music sessions around the town so visitors can hear and play with famous musicians like Jackie Daly, Matt Cranitch, Bryan O’Leary, DerekHicke­y and many more.

The main event of the festival is a gala concert An Glaoch which will be held on Saturday, August 11 at Glash Community Hall. This years concert boasts an glittering lineup of entertaine­rs featuring the likes of multi instrument­alist and singer Niamh Ní Charra, the beautiful voice Elle Marie Dwyer, the Dingle Flautist Aoife Granville, Maura O’Connor from Abbeyfeale who is the current All-Ireland concertina champion and the Flannery sisters from Rockchapel who are two of the brightest of young musicians in the area. Tickets are €10 and available on the door which are open at 8pm - show starts at 8:30 sharp.

There will also be some fringe events such as the Art exhibition, ‘Áit’ which will be held at Newmarket Motors upper showroom 12 to 6pm everyday. Local actor and playwright Mike Guerin will be back to host a Rambling House in Dan Hourigan’s bar which will celebrate the spoken word and song and this will also be headlined by John Spillane on Friday, August 10. There will also be a family BBQ and kids concert in Scullys Bar on Sunday afternoon.

Locals can also settle in to watch ‘ The Man From Toureendar­by” which features the great Timmy O’Connor and “A Captain Unafraid” which will be shown on Friday and Sunday afternoon at the Art exhibition.
