Macroom Action Group and local businesses celebrate Cork Pride
MACROOM Action Group this week encouraged local businesses in Macroom town centre to celebrate Cork Pride, by handing out flags and bunting to be displayed throughout the town in shop windows.
Several businesses have responded enthusiastically, adding flags to window displays and on poles outside premises. The initiative is in co-ordination with Cork Pride, who provided flags and bunting for Macroom Action Group to distribute.
Local business owner Jackie Fitz-gerald of Fitz-gerald’s Bookshop and Chocolate Cafe has been very supportive of the initiative and has decked out her premises with flags and bunting. “Wonderful to see all the support for Cork Pride in Macroom. It is great to see local businesses really trying to be inclusive of everyone,” she said.
The members of Macroom Action Group say they are also delighted with the response of the local community, with flags and bunting visible in businesses as diverse as Fin’s Garden Centre, Enchanted Flowers, O’Learys Hardware, Eleventy2 Boutique, Vodafone, Betsy’s Florist, McCarthys Newsagents and The Bigger Picture.
“Macroom is generally seen as quite a socially conservative town, which makes it all the more important to show our support for Cork Pride and for the local LGBTQI community. I am delighted with the response to our initiative this week,” said Sile Ni Dhubhghaill, local area representative for the Social Democrats and Macroom Action Group committee member.
Fitz-gerald’s Bookshop and Chocolate Cafe will be hosting a Cork Pride Coffee Morning on Saturday, August 4, at 12.30pm.
