Retiring Anna Maria leaves a sparkling legacy at Liscarroll NS

- SHEILA FITZGERALD

PUPILS, parents and staff at Liscarroll National School bade farewell to a much loved teacher recently when Anne Maria Bourke retired following a long and fulfilling career as principal.

A native of Newmarket, Annemaria began her teaching career at Sunday’s Well National School in 1979, and she subsequently relocated to Liscarroll when the position of principal became vacant following the retirement of James Connolly in 1991.

The school has grown very successfully over the years since Anne Maria began her career in Liscarroll. There are now 16 teachers, 15 SNA’s and 183 children on the roll. The development and opening of Lios Curam, which provides classes for autistic children, has proved to be a major advantage to all in its catchment area.

Taking a trip down memory lane, Anne Maria recalled the many celebrities and notable visitors such as ministers, politicians and sports personalities who have officiated at various events throughout the years. “The highlight of my career was welcoming President Michael D Higgins. That was a fantastic day for our school and for the community at large, it will live long in the memories of so many people in the area,” she said.

During her tenure as principal many key community events took place, such as the welcome home festivals (The Gathering) and the re-enactment of the Battle of Liscarroll, the signing of the 1916 Proclamation and National Flag Day. She is hugely proud of her talented pupils, past and present, who have shone in academics, sport, music and dance.

Anne Maria has initiated many notable fundraising events over the years, such as the very successful ‘Who Wants to be a Thousandaire’?, the Duhallow Choral Society concert and, most recently, a sparkling ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ extravaganza in which Mrs Bourke showcased her own dancing skills!

And a final word from Anne Maria’s colleagues: “Mrs Bourke has made many great memories and good friends during her time here, what a legacy she leaves behind. She will be sadly missed by all who have had the pleasure to work with her over the years and we wish her the best of health and happiness in her retirement,” they said.
