Teen sensation Fionn Hickey wins Muskerry Scratch Cup
JUNIOR Cert student Fionn Hickey delivered the points to claim a sensational win in the Muskerry Senior Scratch Cup from a competitive field.
The 15-year old joined Muskerry golf club in 2015 and under the tutelage of Peter Fenlon and Fred Twomey his handicap has dropped from 26 to 1. Fionn has represented Muskerry GC in the Jimmy Bruen shield winning a Munster title and getting to an All-Ireland final. Last year he played Junior Cup for Muskerry and was also on the team that won the Fred Daly Munster Final for the first time.
The great talent represented Munster for the first time at U-16 last year in the Interprovincial series, also winning the Munster U-15 close championship and finished fifth in the Munster U-16 Open Championship.
This year is Fionn’s best to date, representing Muskerry in both Senior Cup and Barton shield, he is part of the Fred Daly team that are again in Munster final to be played later in the month. His victory winning the Muskerry Senior Scratch cup was without doubt one of his greatest achievement shooting two under par for 36 holes to become the youngest winner in the history of the competition at 15 years.
“I had a dream start to the second round with birdies on the second and third but going into the last four holes, level par for the tournament, I trailed by two. However I holed 15-foot birdie putts on 15 and 16 before securing two pars on the tough 17th and 18th to claim my his maiden Senior Scratch victory,” said a delighted Fionn.
To mark the achievement, Fionn received the monthly Cork City and County Youth Sports Star Award at a function in the Metropole Hotel, Cork.
