Big Cork contingent Minnesota bound for World Handball Championships

- Peter Dennehy

WORLD Championship year is always a special one on the handball calender. Played every three years rotating between Ireland and the American continent this year it’s the turn of the US to host them with Minnesota chosen as the host venue. The start draws closer by the day with the World programme due to commence on August 9 running through to completion on August 19.

Over the coming weekend and early days of next week the bulk of close to 400 players who are making the trip from Ireland will arrive in Minnesota and its environs. Some players are already in the US having travelled early but all others will be in the US by next Monday and Tuesday.

For players who are competing in the different World grades a lot of work has been done in the past few months in preparation for what is a gruelling schedule. For anyone hoping to make it to the concluding stages you need to be in good shape to get through the schedule of games, which a player faces over a nine to tenday period.
