Six key reasons for reseeding pastures

- BY ADAM HEFFERNAN

WE are all told that the advantages of reseeding far outweigh the costs. But it is important to remind ourselves what exactly these advantages are.

There are six key reasons for reseeding pastures in the spring, summer or autumn. The first is that you will have more grass at crucial times of the year. New perennial rye grass reseeds deliver four times more grass in spring and autumn than old, permanent pastures

Second, perennial rye grass swards are 25 per cent more responsive to chemical Nitrogen than non-perennial rye grass swards.

Third, reseeded swards with higher perennial rye grass content are quicker out of the traps for regrowth.

Fourth, new reseeds with higher perennial rye grass contents have higher digestibilty, digestible fibre, metabolisable energy, and lower neutral detergent fibre (NDF) than older permanent pastures. Fifth, new reseeds will produce more tonnes and, therefore, more energy per hectare versus older permanent pastures. This will support higher stocking rates.

Finally, new reseeds with higher perennial ryegrass content will give more grazing’s (ten versus six) per year, meaning less supplementation and time inside, and more profit to farmers.

Sinclair McGill mixtures suit every farm scenario from silage to grazing, from zero grazing to site-specific mixtures. It produces high-quality seed and mixtures that outperform rivals in many areas. Its ‘ less weed seeds and more live seeds in every bag’ guarantee, combined with scientifically proven mixtures, makes this seed the best value for every farmer.
