Five still in running for Muskerry JFC title

-

LAST weekend in Muskerry the Ross Oil junior football championship was very much centre stage and the three games played in same got results. The most competitive of same was the encounter involving Eire Óg and Dripsey. Eire Óg were represented by their second choice side but it appeared to be formidable on paper and there were times during the hour that they performed impressively. Dylan Foley in the attack was a particularly effective figure and he played a huge role in enabling them to lead 2-4 to 0-5 at the break.

Two players who would be among Dripsey’s leading footballers Mark O Sullivan and Steve Murray were deemed not fit to commence the game but they had to be introduced when a couple of first team players retired injured. They both made impressions in the second moiety and the fare became more exciting when Dripsey drew level ten minutes from full time. The fare was now very entertaining and with the result very much in the balance. A goal from David Sheahan was the score that eventually set Eire Óg on the road to victory. That game took place at Ballincollig who themselves were in action in the competition on Friday at Blarney. They faced Donoughmore who have slipped back significantly in football over the last few years and the game proved to be very one sided. The score at the finish read Ballincollig 2-12 Donoughmore 1-4.

The third junior football championship game took place in Kilmurry on Saturday evening and Inniscarra are clearly showing that they are reproducing the form they displayed in 2015 when they captured a league title and contested a championship final. Last week saw them securing championship victories on two occasions defeating Kilmichael on Tuesday and proving too strong for Cill na Martra on Saturday. Cill na Martra considering that their second team were on duty have performed well overall but Inniscarra displayed clearly on Saturday last that they are a formidable side.

They will be in action again on Friday next when they will face Canovee wo are in high spirits following their recent victory over reigning champions Kilmurry. Inniscarra and Canovee met in the championship quarter final in 2015 and they treated patrons to two hours of excellent football before the former were victorious by a narrow margin and Friday’s game is likely to again go down to the wire.

On Saturday at Carrigadrohid Iveleary and Eire Óg will be battling it out for a place in the semi final where they will face Ballincollig. Eire Óg have done well in their outings to date with victories over Donoughmore and Dripsey to their credit but their opponents on Saturday could have too much strength in depth. Talented performers like Cathal Vaughan and Chris Óg Jones are likely to be major figures in their quest for victory.
