KILLAVULLEN ADVANCE TO THE DIVISION two LEAGUE SEMI FINAL – Last Wednesday night, August 1, Killavullen played and were host to Newtownshandrum in the Quarter final of the Division 2 hurling league.

Newtown were first to score and it was a goal, in the second minute of the game, with an attack that Killavullen should have cleared. Our backs dallied and Newtown took advantage, and they scored again in the third minute from a free. Pádraig Looney, who was to go on to have a very influential game, got our opening score in the fifth minute after good work by Pa Cronin, in blocking a clearance. Liam Cronin scored a 65 metre shot in the eighth minute and the same player scored from play, again in the eighth minute.

Newtown got a point in the ninth minute before Jack O’Connor scored for us in the same minute. Barry Murphy eluded his marker and fired over a lovely point, to draw the game in the 10th minute Newtown got the next score from their extremely efficient free taker but Barry cancelled out that score and we took the lead for the first time after Barry scored his third point of the night. This was in the 15th minute.

Newtown rejigged their team to curb the influence of Séamus Fox, who was masterful at this stage in his role as centre back, and his new marker, stronger in build than here to fore, scored a long range point in the 18th minute. We hit some poor wides before Pádraig Looney seized on a breaking ball, and fired that over the bar in the 18th minute and repeated the feat a minute later.

Newtown got two points back from frees but Jack O’Connor got another point for us, after being released by Eddie Cotter, in the 22nd minute. Barry got a free for us in the 23rd minute and Eddie Cotter skimmed a delightful point over the bar in the 25th. Newtown were not done though, and scored three points in a row, two from frees, in the 25th, 28th and 29th. The score at the break was 0-12 for us as against 1-10 for Newtown, but disconcerting for us, was the tally of eight wides, and poor shot selection in front of goals.

The management team worked the oracle at the break, and set up the team differently, yet with the same personnel, and the results were a marked improvement in our play. Seán O’Regan and Patrick Angland thundered into the game, and gave our forwards an excellent platform on which to score from. Barry Murphy scored in the fourth minute, Liam Cronin in the fifth and Pádraig Looney again in the 10th. Cian was decisive in goals, his puck outs were very accurate and outside him, Billy Norris and Kevin Fox were in a mean mood, and snuffed out the Newtown attacks. Charlie Lillis and Paul O’Sullivan became much more influential and the later set up Jack O’Connor for an excellent team goal in the 11th minute.

That man Looney scored again in the 13th minute before Newtown scored their opening score of the half in the 13th minute. Pa Cronin saw a shot deflected over the bar before Charlie scored a long range point after good work from Pa Egan. Pádraig was getting the freedom of the park at this stage, and his pace was telling, he scored two points in quick succession, before Newtown got a point back. Charlie got another long range point and then Paul O’Sullivan was next to score a brace of points and Newtown responded with a score of their own.

Eddie Cotter got our 25th point in the 26th minute but Newtown responded with a goal after the newly introduced centre forward caught a good ball, and set up another forward. We were not finished through, and got the final two points of the game, courtesy of Paul O’Sullivan and Jack O’Connor.

The management would have been pleased with the transformation in the second period, but would have some concerns with the tally of 13 wides over the course of the hour. The final score was 1-27 to 2-13 in our favour. The semi-final will be against Charleville, though the date is not fixed yet.
