WITHIN just a day of going on sale last Monday morning all of the tickets for the Liam Miller tribute were snapped up, meaning the match will be played out in front of a full house at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Early on Tuesday organisers of the star-studded match, which will take place on Tuesday, September 25, confirmed that the 45,000 tickets for the eagerly anticipated game had been sold out.

This includes the 7,300 tickets sold for Turners Cross, which had been the original venue for the game before the GAA eventually decided to allow it to be held at the newly refurbished Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Such was the huge demand for tickets on Monday, the website ticket.ie crashed for period on Monday due to the high volume of numbers logging onto the site.

The match will be played out by a Manchester United legends team under the stewardship of Roy Keane, and a combined Republic of Ireland/Glasgow Celtic side managed by Martin O’Neill.

A native of Ovens, Liam Miller tragically lost his battle against cancer last February at the age of 36. During his illustrious career Miller had played for all three of the teams that will be represented at the tribute match, as well as plying his trade in Australia, the US and making 29 appearances

Proceeds from the match will go to help his wife, Claire, and their three young children rebuild their lives, with other charities including Marymount Hospice set to benefit from the day.

The chair of the match organising committee, Michael O’Flynn, said they were thrilled that the one-off game had generated so much interest and that so many people were supporting the event.

“We would like to thank everyone again for their fabulous support. It’s a ringing endorsement of the GAA’s decision to donate the use of their stadium, and we thank them wholeheartedly. This will be a unique sporting occasion in Cork, not only because of the calibre of the soccer stars who will be taking part, but also because it will feature both soccer and GAA sports at the same time,” said Mr O’Flynn.

“It will be a fantastic tribute to Liam Miller, who was one of Cork’s sporting heroes, and a great celebration of sport in Cork,” he added.

Following the match a sold-out black-tie dinner, panel discussion, and live auction will take place at Cork City Hall.
