Festival favourites elated after securing prestigious slot at EP

- BILL BROWNE

HOT on the heels of their critically acclaimed live set at the Indiependence Music Festival, local band The Elation are now gearing up for yet another big day out at one of Europe’s top music festivals.

This comes after the band secured one of 10 slots at the upcoming Electric Picnic in a competition run by RTÉ 2FM aimed at uncovering the next generation of promising Irish music acts.

The four-piece indie/pop outfit, comprised of Mallow lads Chris Cansdale (vocals) and Denis Burke (drums/ percussion), Kanturk’s Declan Kelleher (bass/keys), and Billy Whelan from Cork city on guitar, beat opposition from acts across the country to win one of the 10 slots up for grabs in the ‘Play the Picnic’ competition.

The win tops off what has been, by any standards, a phenomenal year for The Elation, who are widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most exciting young bands.

Included last year in Garageland and Buzz.ie’s top 10 lists of bands to look out for in 2018, The Elation release their debut EP ‘Clickbait’ in early June.

Written and recorded over 18 months in London, the EP was produced by multi-platinum selling producer Andy Whitmore, who has worked with a veritable ‘who’s who’ of the global music industry including artists such as Elton John, Eternal, Pet Shop Boys and Terence Trent Darby.

Already buoyed by the fact that the first two singles taken from the record, ‘Catch’ and ‘XO’, received huge airtime on radio stations across Ireland and the UK, the EP went straight to number three in the indie Irish charts.

The band then embarked on a tour of radio stations and festivals around Ireland with their electric live shows, including show-stopping performances at the Townlands Festival in Macroom and ‘Indie’, opening up their music to a whole new cohort of fans.

The third single taken from the EP ‘Feels Like A Good Reason to Get Started’, which featured in the Indiependence after-movie, is set to be released at the tail end of this month ahead of their Electric Picnic appearance.

Chris Carnsdale said summer 2018 will live long in the memories of each of the band members.

“Clickbait going to number three in the charts was a huge milestone for the band, and we want to thank everyone who voted for us in the 2FM competition and helped us to get the slot at the Electric Picnic,” he said.
